I have a space booked (along with 6 friends) with Cassidy Outfitters next month for a 5 day archery Elk hunt during the rut, on an approximately 9,000 acre private ranch bordering Gunnison Nat'l monument.

Unfortunately, when I booked the hunt 9 months ago I wasn't expecting to be starting a new business concurrent with the hunt... it kills me because I've been looking forward to this hunt, but I simply can't justify hunting in Colorado while $250,000 of new geophysical testing equipment sits idle (trust me, the payments on that stuff has my attention, and I’m the only person that know how to run it).

I have already fully paid for this hunt and money would exchange hands with me, not the guide. The person that took my spot would be given the guide's contact info so that all parties know this is legit. The hunt is worth $3200, and I'd be happy to entertain the first offer in the $2000 vicinity. OTC elk tags not included, but EVERYTHING else is... 1:1 to 2:1 guiding with the guides setting up behind 1 or 2 strategically placed bowhunters and calling for them.

Scroll down until you get to the "Packrat Camp" hunt... that's the one (but the dates are incorrect)...

The hunt dates are Wednesday September 20 through Sunday September 24. Three guys from my club (Kings Mountain Archers), and one of the owners of Predators Archery in Gilroy, are planning to drive from the Bay Area, leaving Sunday September 17. The other two guys are driving out from SoCal... there is a possibility that the person who replaces me, if they are from the Bay Area or SoCal, can carpool with the rest of the bowhunters on this trip.

The hook-up location to meet the guide is Tuesday at 4pm in Montrose. The guide recommended purchasing the OTC elk tag in Grand Junction at the Sportsman's Warehouse (and stocking up on any last minute supplies), but I expect it can also be purchased in Montrose (the guide will assist with making sure you know where to go to purchase the right tag).

All lodging in cabins, all meals, all transportation on the ranch and/or to-from Montrose if you fly in, carcass transport back to camp, etc... the only thing not included is the elk tag, booze, meat processing (which can be had in town for about $75), and a tip for the guide. Bring your own hunting gear and sleeping bag and that’s it.

Those of you that know me know that my heart is broken that I can’t go on this hunt this year…

but my loss is hopefully someone else’s gain.

Send me an e-mail through JHO with your phone number and I'll call you if anyone is interested...

Oh dude! My heart aches for you. Priorities. Wow.

Wish I could oblige. I'm in WY 9/9 - 9/19. It would work out perfect. But, my house would be empty upon my return.

Dang BC!!! My jaw dropped as I read your post. To bad and I'm sure you worked every scenario out in your head to make it work. I feel your pain. I'm off to Idaho on the 9th of Sept for my archery elk. If I do end up with one I will be willing to share some of my meat with you. Sorry to hear the bad news. Good luck with your new buisness venture.

Somebody freakin jump on this quick! I'd be all over it like a cheap suit if I weren't gonna be in WY just before. The Cassidy's have a good rep and this is a golden opportunity. BC you are a cool dude to offer this up to JHO'ers.

That should be a fantastic hunt right near the peak of the rut! I know what it's like to have to eat a good hunt (2b NM mule deer) and it is no fun.

Had a few nibbles... one person can't get the time off work, another's wife won't let him, another is thinking about it for a few more days...

Ya heard what wmidbrook said... peak of the rut! Damn I wish I was going...

Way to go, Sacfire!

Can't wait to hear the tales, and YES, I'm jealous. All I can say is, the danged fish BETTER be biting in Mexico! If it weren't for that trip, I'd have jumped all over this deal!

FYI, SacFireJT is an elk hunting nut... he's in Oregon now. If he ends up with an OR elk and scores in CO, I may end up with some elk meat anyway because he won't have any place to put it!

SacFireJT and my other buddies called me on the way home from Colorado yesterday.

In summary, the hunt SUCKED... moreover, the outfitter apparently sucked, lied, misled, and breached the contract and when they called me they we're all out front of a CO Div. of Wildlife office filling a formal complain against the outfitter. SacFireJT said it's not just sour grapes that no one got an elk (1 guy got a small consolation mule deer) as they are all experienced hunters and used to coming home with nothing... it's the fact that they were treated like crap and lied to. It sounded really bad if the guides were "scared" of the outfitter and the poor camp cook was in tears the whole week. Apparently, my buddies and SacFireJT even offered the cook at one point to tip her out early and drive her home as they didn't agree with the way she was being treated.

I feel really bad that I recruited a JHO'er to go in my place, but when I talked to SacFireJT yesterday he said he knew I would say that, and not to fret too much as he said it was apparent from his own eyes that I got taken just like the rest of my buddies.

SacFireJT intends to post a scathing, but objective, full trip report, perhaps as early as this evening, detaining the myriad things that were wrong in that camp... his words for now... be very aware before booking with Cassidy Outfitters in Colorado.

What a bummer...

Wow! That really sucks! Sorry all the way around. My buddy had a good hunt with them a few years ago. I guess you never know. I sure hate hearing stories like this.

BOWUNTER (Ed Fanchin) also had a good hunt with them in Wyoming, and he said he knows a guy who has shot some big deer on this ranch... but those stories/events apparently weren't replicated this year on this ranch...

I'm very curious to read SacFireJT's whole synopsis as maybe a day in the truck will have tempered the experience (then again, he may be more upset).
