So I'm hunting Friday night on my friends ranch. He has a hog that is rutting up the ground near his house (where he waters his strawberries). Being that all is water comes from the now dry creek he really hates to be watering just for this hog to tear the place up.
Well I get to the property around 630 and talk with the land owner for a few minutes then go sit in a area that I know the hog is using to come from. At about 730 I hear something coming from the bushes and hello big boy. A nice black boar with a white belt about 175-200 is about 20 yards out. I put my 20 yard pin on him and pull the trigger. Man the sound a Rage broadhead makes when it his a hog in the side of the head is nasty.
He rams off and I see my arrow fall so I assume it just bounced off of him.
After getting the arrow I find that about 2 inches are missing and the front if the shaft is covered in blood. Since it's now dark I wait for a friend to come up with more lights. He shows up at around 930 and go to show him where I hit it at and WTF the hog is standing there feeding.

If you didn't know already; pigs have HARD heads (lol). I shot one a few years ago with the 7 mag and bounced a 160 Accubond off his noggin. It tumbled his gyros, but he managed to stumble off with (I assume) a raging headache.

Okay...if nobody else has the sack to say it, I will. You don't deserve your broadhead back! Whether you intentionally aimed for the noggin' or flubbed the shot and missed by that much...I gotta side with the pig on this one.

Rage is meant to cut a big blood hole in the side of an animal. .500 is meant for shooting them in the skull. Gotta know your limitations.

Mlindsay, at least u got a shot off, do u think u still might get a second chance at the pig. rages are alright for mechs but they are not perfect thats for sure. i had a friend on a hunt nail a pig with a 3 blade rage and there was a little bloodtrail to work with and it was getting dark, brought in the dogs and still never found that pig, makes u wonder.
i have used reapers and rages before but i decided to go back to solid broadheads agian myself, now i am using Nap Hellraisers, i will use the reapers for turkeys.
good luck on your next outing and hope u get another chance at that pig.......tra

Thank you TRA I went back yesterday and the hog came down in the same spot but it was a little to dark to get a shot off. I'll be back at it after work today.

Sounds like you made a good choice yesterday. If you don't get it today, I am sure you will soon. Good luck.

I used to use Muzzy's and started using the Rage two-blade after losing a couple of hogs shot in the 10-ring. Never lost another one. I'll shoot them out of preference any time. But not in the head. For those of you who are critical of his shot; anything can happen with a bow. There's a lot to remember all at once, and if you've never missed an animal (or shot one poorly) then you haven't been hunting much! Quit picking on the poor guy.

I'm rooting for you; you'll get it done!

The way the OP wrote it, it seemed like he intentionally aimed for the head:

"I put my 20 yard pin on him and pull the trigger. Man the sound a Rage broadhead makes when it his a hog in the side of the head is nasty."

Nowhere did he state he missed his intended target by a foot because he was a newbie...if he had i would have cut him some slack. And for the record, you can have poor shots caused by a mechanical failure like a vane catching the dropaway or the arrow deflected by an unseen twig but those are the exception to the rule. Some people only take shots they know they can make while others shoot at game. One is ethical and is concerned about unnecessarily wounding an animal while the other will not mind so much. JMO based on what I've seen.

Thank you guys. If he shows himself while there is still good shooting light I'll get him tonite.
I had meant to say in my original post about my grip bring tight on the bow but forget since a buddy called while in the middle of typing.

And even tho I was once informed on here that if that's the only shot you have with a bow to take it, I would never intentionally shot any animal in the head.

Just part of the learning experience. The good part is that if you do connect you will get your broadhead back! I'm waiting for pictures........

Not meaning to bag on you, Bruce. Understood. I assumed just the opposite (having gotten good and wound up a few times looking at my pins).
