Hello all,
Here is a picture of my youngest son's first hunt. The hunt took place in Idaho on a controlled hunt, where only 20 Bull Elk tags were issued. We were informed that he was too young to put in for California this year (do to his birth date), But he was old enough to put in for Idaho. We practiced diligintly to prepare for his hunt. Shooting out to 300 yards, knowing that this is a common occurance in Western big game hunting. Well we spotted this Bull Elk with 20 cows opening morning. We devised a stalk which took us 2 hours to get to 285 yards, most of that was on our knees. Several times I asked if he wanted me to hold his rifle but he would reply no. He made the first shot @ 285 yards through both lungs. The Bull ran for about 60 yards looked around, then stumbled and bedded obviously hurt. My son moved closer for a second shot in which, @ 260 yards, put the final shot through his heart. His first words to me were " man dad that was exciting ". It was an experience that will last the rest of our lifetime.

That's a nice bull for a young boy to take. Love that rolling sage country in the background.

Perfect! Congrats to your son and a huge high five to you EB (dad)!

Cool country you are in there. It looks perfect for sharptail and sage grouse.

Quacker Whacker, That was shot outside of challis as we been hunting this area for 12 years now mostly for deer and the elk were very abundant in this area that we thought we would start putting in for the draws.G

Excellent bull & great pics. But if its your sons 1st elk, wheres the pictures of him biting the liver or the blood face paint?
<

On the drive to our hunt, I told my son he going to have to eat the fresh liver if he knocked anything down.
<
The 1st words of his mouth when we were gutting his cow, "If you try to make me eat that liver, I'm running to the truck".

Funny Story YORT40,
My son probably would have had the same thing to say. Plus I had to remember he had the gun and it may have been me eating more raw liver and drinking the blood. However he did dive right in and help me quarter the elk and in the process was wearing the blood. Thanks for the nice comments.

Yep, in all honesty I have more fun watching my son go through the routine & the expression on his face after a well placed shot, than shooting myself. For that matter, I really enjoy watching the shows with young men & their fathers hunting together. This is priceless time spent with a maturing boy.
When I pulled my son out of school for a week to go to CO, the reasons I wrote down in the school office were, "A week long independent study of American culture & tradition".
