Idaho hunt

Im planning on a non res hunt for elk/deer in Idaho. As I was going thru the app process it states that you must first purchase the license at a fee of $141.50 in order to buy the tag(s). Can anybody tell me if I can get a refund on my license fee if im unsuccessful in receiving a tag? Thanks.

Trying for Selway B, sounds like decent odds with a decent success.

Any extra advice would be helpful.

No, there are no refunds on license fees in ID. There are basically always general tags available well after the limited entry draw. The options for the general area A/B tags start narrowing down following the draw tho.

I thought the only tags for a drawing in Idaho were for controlled hunts. The A and B tags were all over the counter for both residents and non-residents. I was debating on whether or not to go to Idaho this year or Colorado, finally decided on Colorado. The last time I checked tag status in Idaho which was back in December Selway B had sold out in the first couple of days it was out, which is not surprising since it is a rifle hunt during the rut. I would have to recheck the web site for tag status but traditionally by now the only over the counter tags left are A tags for archery only, but I could be mistaken.

I asked an Idaho outfitter at the pomona international sportsmans exposition where a good zone for non-residents to draw an elk tag he said try the Island Park Zone .

Some zones, including this one, have caps on tags, which are sold on a first-come basis.

I am a resident of Idaho, though only for the pas 2 years. I havn't been into the Selway zone, but I believe it is in the Wilderness areas, at least the good hunting is, therefore most use horses. This is also the area many locals who have hunted there for years with horses are complaining the most about the wolves. My friend who mostly bow hunts, hunted the rut around McCall and just couldn't get the bulls to bugle much because of the pressure from the wolves.

There are some good zones with slighly easier access. This is awefull rough country. I believe Idaho is the best place to hunt, much less pressure than Colo and much easier to get a tag than Ariz/N. Mex, but many who come and hunt here don't come back because it's just too steep here, especially where the elk live.

Thanks guys for the helpful responses. Sounds like some wolf hunts are badly needed. I got in contact with a good buddy who hunted the southeastern zone for muleys also. He said the weather last year was too hot for any decent hunting and the area was pretty dry. Has the precip improved this year? Any reccommendations for a non res elk? Thanks again, shoot straight.
