All I could see was one forked beam sticking up over the grass. "Dang," he whispered, "it's only a three point! Oh, we're in big trouble now."

Sorry... I left them over at Mudwalker's house. I'll get them scanned in by tomorrow night, how's that?[/b]

Hmmmm... let's see, that was on the 27th, one more day would make it the 28th, today's the 30th **shhhh... I'm counting** Oh forget it. I don't think you really shot one, anyway. I saw that one picture but I'll bet it's one of those cutouts that you stand next to and get your picture took. You didn't shoot no elk, fibber.

Shhh.... don't tell nobody. I got 'em all fooled with that freezer full of beef!

Sorry, it's been a helluva week. Just finished a 30 hour day, took two hours sleep, and back to work. If it weren't for JHO, I dunno how I'd ever make it!

Hmm... on the other hand, if it weren't for JHO, I probably wouldn't have to work 30 hour days to get my work finished.

I forgot the pix when I was at Mudwalker's the other day. Have to grab 'em next time I'm over there.

Some great pics there, looks like nice country. I like the warning speck

When did you get it?? I assume it was before the butchering job started at a check station of some kind.

Along with BDB's question, how did the warden tell you to maintain proof of sex on a butchered animal? Hmmm thinking about it now, you must have had to check that elk in somewhere which seems like it would have been a pain to do before butchering.

Oh yeah.. the warning ticket. Did I forget to mention that in my story?
<

Anyway, I think it was Monday morning, I was laying around camp reading and must've fell asleep by the fireplace. Suddenly I hear the door open, and a stranger comes strolling into the cabin. Be ready for this when you go, Steve... folks on the mountain just kinda pop right in whenever... I guess they all know each other.

Anyway, it's the game warden, and we chat for a minute or two. He asks how it went, and if that's my bull hanging in the shed. We go out and I show him the antlers, then my tags and license. Then he asks if he can see the carcass. I peel down the bag and there it is.

Meantime, flashback... when I skinned out the elk, with the help of Justin (first year guide), I just removed the cojones like I usually do. Not a second thought. Then, as we're looking at the finished job, Justin says "oops."

So we cut a couple of slits on either side of the haunches, then hung one on each side like Christmas ornaments.
<

OK, back to Monday...

So the warden sees what we did and laughs. "Looks like you removed the proof of sex."

I fessed up and explained the error. So he gives me the warning ticket, basically to use in case I get stopped again by a less friendly game warden. It's proof that I'd already been checked and certified.

It was really mellow, and he was extremely cool about it. He had a job to do, and I think he did it in the best way possible. There's no reason he couldn't have given me a real ticket and left it to me to fight or pay.

I've heard the horror stories about how out-of-state hunters can get screwed, but this guy was awesome. Even gave me some hints for my next trip.

Steve, I'm starting to get a little envious that you're gonna be there next fall. You are gonna have SUCH a blast!

Thanks for the details Speck!

Hogskin,

Your comment made me laugh because the only time I've been with anybody who has gotten a ticket from DFG was a friend while hunting along the A zone-B-zone border. He shoots a 3-pointer in the A-zone. To get to him we had to drive around to the road that is the border. It was way after dark and he had hitched a ride from some other hunters heading back to camp. We meet them and he jumps in the back of the truck. Next vehicle along are the game wardens. They ask what we are doing. I tell them we are going to pick up my buddies deer and they ask who shot it. My friend pipes up "I did, want to see the tag?" Well, they follow us and give my friend a ticket for not having his tag on the deer. Got it thrown out later.

Sounds like he was pretty cool about it. I'll remember that when I'm gutting and skinning next Oct.
<

You might be getting envoius Speck but next Oct. is a LONG way away and it's gonna kill me to wait that long. It will probably be even worse after the cow elk hunt this dec (my first elk hunt )

Just out of curiosity, how do they handle the proof of sex thing if you are doing a back country hunt and de-bone it to get it out? I assume proof of sex only counts while the carcas is still whole.

I asked the warden that same question, Steve. He kinda got that look like..."well, that's a grey area"... but basically said if you have to, you can drop the cojones in a bag and pack them out with everything else. Apparently that's not something they'd prefer to see you do, but there are limits where letter of law and spirit of law may diverge slightly.

Roger, the self-guided hunter, packed his in a zip-loc when we boned out his bull, but he didn't get checked, so I dunno what the technicalities would've been.

If you're quartering, it's easy enough to leave them on the back quarters. That's how the guides did it when I helped pack out their cows. Just leave one on each side, attached by a little bit of skin.

Yeah, I know October is a long ways off. But you know you'll be going, and I know what a blast you'll have. Hopefully, the weather will be more conducive to a good hunt as well. It was hot with a full moon while I was there.

I checked on-line and the new moon is on 10/14/04, or 10/13/04 depending on the site you check. My hunt is 10/11 to 10/15/04. That's good I guess

3 Years ago I got a 4x3 Mulie cross with 6" eye guards and I kept the nuts AND peter (along with the head above the neck- not that that matters for them).

I stopped in to have a rat bear tag verified and tooth pulled @ 88 station and they seen the dear head in the back when I pulled out the bear hide. Both were boned ou meat in the 140 qt cooler at the same time and I was "formally" asked to show the nuts from the deer.

I grew up hunting bears in Washington and learned at an early age that a bear's main bone for more bears is the best dog whislte and tooth pick to keep in your hat strap. I thought my sons might like to have the pleasure of seeing if the deers was like my hat one (unfortunately the bear I got was a sow) and if they wanted to do some whiddling. Lucky me- the warden actually pretended to take hair samples from the nuts and the head with "masking tape" and said I was free to go for now.

The only question I had in my head was "where do they get these left wing dikes from"?

gl2us all and not the Phesants that open Saturday,
Your Friend,
Dan

One more thing to remember in CO is that the antlers are supposed to be the last thing taken out of the field. My lesson this year was inexpensive, as a fellow hunter, not a warden pointed out the error of my ways. I took the antlers on my second of four trips, and left everything hanging by the truck while packing the rest out. He saw that and said a buddy was ticketed last year for that. I would think it is perfectly obvious that with nobody around a truck parked with elk quarters hanging nearby means the successful hunter is going back for the rest, but.....

VERY NICE PICS. WE LEAVE @ THE END OF NOV. FOR THE COW HUNT. LAST YEAR 3 OF US WERE DONE WITHIN THE FIRST 5 HRS. I HOPE WE CAN DO IT AGAIN. 1 QUESTION, I NOTICED YOU HAD YOUR MEAT PROCESSED IN CAMP, WAS THAT BY CHOICE? IVE READ THE NEW TRANSPORT REGS. SO I'M WONDERING IF ITS MANDATORY TO CUT UP IN COLORADO, OR WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE.

Yort,

To answer your question... I processed the meat in camp by choice, as I process all my own game.

However, the CA CWD restrictions require you to either have the meat processed by a certified processor, or to bring back only boned meat. I posted a link to those restrictions earlier up in this thread. Read 'em close, because they are fairly specific.

Man, there's a ton of weather happening in CO right now! You guys heading out for the final season ought to see something moving down out of the high country.

Good hunting!
