I got back on Saturday night from King City. I was pretty beat or I would of posted earlier. Now for the short story, we went 3 for 3. All the hogs we shot were over 200 pounds. Saw over 150 hogs on 3 ranches in 9 hours of hunting. We had a GREAT time and cant wait to do it again. Heres the long story if your interested.

DAY 1.

Arrived in King City a little after 1pm on friday. Our guide (Frank-Mustang Guide Service) met us at our hotel at 2pm. We got our gear ready and followed him to his work. Once at his work, we met up with "Kek" (One of his other guides). We then hunted a ranch that was 35,000 acres that was adjecent to his work. My 3 buddies (2 were hunting and 1 was video taping the hunt) jumped in Keks truck and I jumped in Franks truck. We headed to different areas of the ranch. Frank and I headed to an area where he knew of some hog beds in a canyon. We got out and hunted the canyon, but nothing was around. My other 3 buddies and Kek went to another canyon and thet didnt see anything as well. We all met up at Frank decided to take us to a different ranch in San Ardo. We arrived at the other ranch (which was 10,000 acres). Again we split up keeping in contact via 2 way radios. After about 20 minutes into driving the ranch roads, Kek radioed us he had a heard of about 20 hogs moving south along the ridges . Frank and I were already up high and decided to stay put since they were coming our way. 5 minutes later I see the hogs running approximately 1000 yards out and Kek and my buddies are north of them. At this point they are approximately 100 yards from the hogs and my buddy Paul aims and "Ka Boom" 1 shot/1 kill, one sow goes down. My buddy Jeff didnt shoot. They field dress the sow and throw her in the back of the truck. We meet up and plan out what were gonna do next. Frank and Kek decide they wanna take us to another side of the ranch that is closer to the River. I jump in Keks truck and Jeff jumps in Franks truck. As were heading up this hill, my buddy Paul shouts out and points "Hog!", I look to where he points and Kek SLAMMS on the brakes. This is honestly the Biggest Boar, I have ever seen on any hunt. The hog was about 50 yards from us on the hill and he bolted, now hes out of sight. We run over to where he was and nothing. We run up and over the hill and BINGO they he is. Its a single boar and now hes on a full run. This pig was well over 300 pounds and was fast as heck. I drop to one knee rack a round in the chamber and sight in. He was approximately 200 yards out and I had a broadside shot. I had him in my crosshairs and all I see is a nice set of tusk and my heart is pounding a mile a minute cause hes a trophy. I lead my shot a little and squeeze the trigger. "KA BOOM", I shot right under his chin. I rack another round in the chamber and right at that time he goes over the hill and he is out of sight. I was pretty upset at myself at this point, cause I really wanted this pig. On the other side of the hill where the hog ran is was REALLY brushy, so we didnt pursue him. We drove to a different area of the ranch and were driving along a ravine when hogs bolted in ever direction. My buddy Jeff jumps out and I jump out as well. We cant see the hogs because there is brush in front of us but we think they are running up the hill. Jeff runs to the opposite hill to get a clear shot over the treeline. "I see him raise his 7mm Mag and "KA BOOM", Miss....Just as the hogs are to the top of the hill I can see them now. Jeff reloads his Ruger #1 and "KA BOOM" he hits a big sow on the rear left leg breaking her leg. Now she toped the hill and is out of site. Kek lets one of his dogs go cause she is wounded now. Daylight is almost gone and we have to move fast. We start hiking and the dog is LONG GONE. We stop and we hear barking off to the distance and know the dog has the pig at bay. After another 600 yard hike we finally reach the pig and dog (This pig traveled 600 yards with a broken rear leg...Amazing). Jeff put one behind her ear to finish her off. Now its dark and we dress her out and have to drag her out of this canyon. We FINALLY get her back to the truck and head back to Franks work to skin the hogs.

DAY 2

We meet Frank at Dennys at 5:30 am and have breakfast. After breakfast we head to one of his ranches in San Lucas. I told Frank I'm leaving the rifle in the case I wanna take one with my 44Mag. We get to the ranch and Kek has another guy whos hunting by himself. Frank and my group jump in his truck and Kek and the other guy jump in there truck. We spilt up keeping in contact. Kek spots a BIG herd of hogs on top on this canyon called "Buck Hill". Kek radios to us there location and we set up a ambush. I can now see the hogs but they are WAY out of pistol range and Frank ask if I wanna let a 2 dogs go. Since my buddies never seen dogs work on a hog, I said go ahead. He lets 2 dogs go and they go over the hill after the pigs.We drive around the base of the canyon and we cant see anything. We get out of the truck and listen for barking. We hear the dogs barking approximately 300 yards north of us. We hike up to where the hog is and get within 40 yards. Frank calls off one of his dogs and now its just this big sow and one dog. He tells me to take my shot as soon as the dog is clear of the hog. I pull out my 44 and cock back the hammer. The dog breaks bay and I raise my redhawk "KA BOOM", I hit the hog at about 40 yards just above the left front leg. She drops for a second and gets back up and begins to run. I was like "DAMN!" I cant belive shes moving after that. Well she runs another 60 yards and Frank put the dogs back on her. Frank and I run up to within a few yards of her and he pulls one of the dogs off. When I had a clear shot, I put one in her head to put her down for good. We field dressed her and put her on the truck. All in all we had a great time. Saw a TON of hogs, saw some deer and a few yotes. I got the whole hunt on Video and took a bunch of pics with my digital camera. Pauls hog ended up being about 205lb, Jeffs was 240lbs and mine ended up being 220lbs. Cant wait to do it again.

Bryan

P.S. I cant post any pics due to my computer being older than dirt and it does not have a USB port, so I need to figure out how I can get these posted on here.

Congrats Bryan,
Sounds like you guys had a ball. I can't wait till I go in April. If you want to stop buy here at my house sometime I can download your pix into my computer and send them to you, or scan them, either way.

Sounds like you guys had fun, Bryan.

Yupp, gotta watch those marginal shots on hogs. A deer'll go down pretty easy, but those hogs are tough!

I went up above Sonoma County on a Golden Ram property this weekend. No hogs close enough to aim at, and very little sign on a beautiful piece of property. I couldn't understand it. It sure was nicer than hanging out around the house all weekend, though!

Can't wait 'til that March POR.

All right! I sure am glad you guys had a good time. After the last report from Yotegetter I was becoming a bit worried about Franks operation. You trip sounds pretty much like the 8 or 9 trips I have had with him. All great times. Just curious, did he say anything in response to Yotegetter's bad hunt?

SDHNTR,

Yeah, I brought it up during the ride from the first ranch we hunted to the second ranch we hunted. I dont wanna open up a can of worms and its none of my business. I was just curious on his side of the story.

What does the fish and game say about using radios and big game hunting? I'm not pointing fingers cause I've used them myself. I try not to use them to get "the animals between us", as I think this is illegal. I would be extra careful about what I post on a public forum. Sounds like an action packed hunt. Not quite my style, but meat in the freezer.

That you can't use radios to hunt big game. That doesn't mean you can't use them while hunting.

Hey Bryan,
thanks for very good complete report, can you tell us who the guide service was and the cost?

Can you tell the difference in meat quality taste between sow and boar much in the 200lb. range?

Looking to archery hunt first time and bringing my bro in law with rifle in casr I don't get a bow shot.

Thanks,

Jim >Killzone>

MikenSoCo,

I certainly respect your opinion. Even though that is not "Your Style" (Dont know if it was keeping in contact with Radios or using Dogs) I guess it depends on what your looking for in a hunt. Thats why there is so many choices out there in Guide Services. Me personally, I wouldnt go with a guide who dosent have a good success rate. The last thing I wanna do is pay $300/$400 to go on a nature walk when I can do that on BLM land for free. This might sound selfish, but if I'm gonna pay a guide...I "Expect" to see hogs, period! His job is to get me a "Reasonable Shot" once he fulfils that, its my turn to complete the shot and harvest the animal. I couldnt see just handing over $400 to guy and not seeing anything at all..just my two cents.

Killzone,
Most of the pigs I have shot have been closer to the 200 pound range. I only shot one small sow that was barely over a hundred pounds and that was the best tasting pig I have ever harvested. Usually the youger ones ALWAYS taste better and the meat is not as gamey. I love wild pork and I have a taste for it. I think it really depends on the hog and what they have been eating. If the hogs have been eating nothing but grass its gonna taste different then hogs feeding in barley fields all day long. I also think it also depends on how you prepare it in the kitchen. I used Mustang Guide Service out of King City and it was $400.00 w/no trophy fees. If you look in the "Receipe" section of this forum, there are some GREAT receipes on wild pork. Hope this helps.

I have looked all over for regs concerning the use of two-way radios in CA, and couldn't find them. I was under the impression that it was illegal to use them for driving game or guiding other hunters to animals, but the fact is, if the regulation exists, it is buried in some arcane corner of the "big book" and not addressed in the little regulations handbook.

Or did I just miss it?

This came up a year or so ago, and I was dead convinced that it was illegal. But I couldn't find it in writing.

I use them occasionally when I hunt with a partner in order to keep track of one another. I think it's a helpful safety tool.

Regarding radios, There is no regulation in California prohibiting the use of radios while hunting. I always thought it was illegal but I was wrong. I read the regs again and spoke to my buddy who is a DF&G warden, no mention of it in the regs and he says it is not illegal. The bigger question is whether it is ethical.

Thanks for the clarification fellows. Hoghunter, I agree, to pay 4 bills and see nothing would be tough to swallow. Once again, I don't judge anybody or their style of hunting. Besides, who can argue with meat in the pot!? I personally prefer to hike all day and see nada than to bounce around in a pick up looking for hogs, that's all. And yes, sometimes I wish I had a dog to get the pigs out of the steep thick stuff for me. I know with using a truck/atv, dogs and rifles, my success rate would sky rocket. But heck, that's my own personal choice and I pay the price in harvest numbers. I'm going to dig around for the radio answer as far as hunting goes, I know I read something about "herding" somewhere along the line.... Shoot Straight-

I knew I saw it somewhere. It was here:

http://www.jesseshuntingpage.com/radios.html

Other sites have variations on this:

"RADIO USE WHILE HUNTING: It is legal to use and posses two way radios while hunting in California with one restriction. You CANNOT herd or pursue game with the radios. Calling in to meet for lunch or needing help dragging a animal out is okay. Calling your buddy that the buck is 100 yards to his left or coordinating drives is illegal. There is no DFG reg on this but wardens will cite you under the "Fair Chase" interpretation of the game laws. "
