This spring the importance of good bino's was brought home to me- again. While hunting Javelina I was on a ridge looking down at lots of prickly pear cactus, mequite trees etc. when I noticed a dark object in the shadows of a tree. Well I assumed it was just another barrel cactus, but since I had my binos (Bushnell Legend 8 x 42) I had a look -and low and behold 100 yards away in the shadows was a javelina. So I took a good sitting position and sent a 120 grainer from my 6.5 x 55 Sweede through it.

Seems like it does not matter what I'm hunting: javelina, deer, coyotes or even rabbits and squirrels good binos always help bring home more game not just because it allows us to see farther but even at 30 yards in a dark woods ,it allows you to see a deers ear move, that would be undetected by the un-aided eye.

Any one else bring home more game because of good glass?

when i lived back east hunting was more of a close quarters set up most of the time with little glassing, but now living out west glassing is essential as well as long range shooting to be more successfull and productive in createing more opportunties in filling the frezer, saves a lot of time and you can be more selective when trophey hunting, and yes i now have a few pair myself and its a must if you hunt out west..........tra

Good point AZ Hunter. I have a good pair of 8 x 42's as well.

What do you use when you're glassing longer distances, say a few miles or more? Do you stick with the 8 x 42's, or do you go with 10 x 50's or 12 x 50's?

Couldn't agree more. 10x42 and 15x58 on the tripod. Almost all the hunting we do in the west starts with the glass.

KPHunter, right now I only have the 8 x 42's. Sometimes I would like a larger bino, though. However, I know my wife would not be to thrilled if I spent a $1000.00 on some good glass to mount on a tripod once in a while; and I'm affraid to purchase "bargain" 15 powers. I'll keep my eyes and ears open though, sometimes you find a person needing extra cash quickly and they may unload a nice pair for cheep.

Anyone try image stabilizing binos? I bought Canon 8x and have been very happy. The stabilizers work great - they let you see details within your image. It's like getting added power. A boar at an extreme distance will dance in the viewfield w/o the stabilizer. But with the stabilizer it holds steady so you can make out details.

Try the Pentax 16x60's. I used them for several years and they were a bargain. Not Swarovski quality, but for less than $300 they were worth every penny.

Thanks Coues. A Pentax would be just fine, and the price is right, too. I'll look into them.

I picked up a pair of 15X60 fujinons for a a good long range pair on a tripod you gotta spend two-three times as much money to get any better quality. Check Baker Marine online. sometyhing like 600 or 700 bucks.

Bearbasin.com has good prices on all kinds of glass. I bought 10x42's from Cabela's (Alaskan Guide) and they are damn skippy. I spent $550 on them and I am quite happy.
