info on non-resident elk tag drawings??

after reviewing a few pages of threads it looks like im a little late on applying for a few drawings.
I put in for some New Mexico tags a couple of months ago, but only because my father always does. But for some reason he has really never researched any further on what other drawings there are.

I know when applying for trophy elk, your changes are very slim, but im fairly young and i figure i should start now, maybe just accumulating points, etc...

So if anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
basically just looking for advice, on where to put in, how, etc...

I'm in california, and I already put in for california hunts, just looking to put in as a non-resident and try my luck.

if there is a post or area that goes over this, please forgive me, i couldnt find anything specific using the search.

If you can afford it, those point-tracking , applying companies will do the work for you. Otherwise, get the regs for the the western US and just keep applying. Unless you have your heart set on a trophy bull hunt,. I'd consider higher entry hunts that offer OTC tags. Or at least put in for a few cow hunts that are easier to draw. it will get you out into the elk woods more while your waiting for that primo tag.

First thing you need to do for NEXT year is download the hunting stats and regulations for all the States you have in mind. Read everything you can get your hands on, and plan...
Then in order to develop a plan, you need to be realistic. Put in for all the premium tags you want and can afford, but some states require the purchase of a full out of state lic. when you put in for the tags(whether you get drawn or not).
Then you need to realise you are putting your odds in the hands of the hunting gods, who sometimes don't smile down on some hunters for years. Some states it takes 6-12 years to draw a good tag, especially Nevada and Arizona.
Then you need to form a backup plan, which most of us use anyway...

one question, what states should i be looking at for elk?

am i too late this year for any states? i'll start looking today, but if anyone knows of anything still open, please advise.

Nevada,online deadline is 4-17.Oregon,deadline is early May,and Az,online deadline is early/mid June ---

thanks! i'm 27, so im fine with waiting the 6-12 years for a nice hunt.
just seeing what i need to do to start that wait.

anyone recommend a point-tracking, applying company? not saying that i want to have them do it, but i figure it wouldnt hurt to research that route as well.

Almost all the Western States have huntable populations of elk, in fact California has all three species. You will need to go to the individual states websites, where you want to go, and download the online regulations. It will list the big game stats, hunt draw deadlines, fees and point number requirements.
As to the type of hunting you want to do, your pocket book, your choice of state, class type of head all will dictate the hunt zone and draw to put in for. This whole process is almost an art, and needs to be planned out properly or it can be a waste of time and money. If you set your sights on book class animals in the very retricted zones, you will have your work cut out for you.There will be thousands joining you...
Go to the links at the top of the page and check out the great info Jesse has ut together. Or pick up one of the better hunting magazines and start drooling...
One thing I do is put in for the premium draw hunts, buy a point in certain states I know I won't be able to hunt this year, then buy an OTC bow tag for my main back up state. That way I will be building points if I don't get drawn, then have my OTC bow tag as a sure thing...

thanks for the info. i understand its a process that can be very long, and take much planning. just looking for some info so i can start somewhere. i think i've got enough to get me started.
and i guess new mexico extended the deadline a couple days, so i'll be up late tonight trying to figure things out.
