Information Needed to Solve Elk Poaching South of Winslow

AGFD Wildlife News
September 2, 2004

PHOENIX - The Arizona Game and Fish Department is asking for the public's help in finding a poacher that killed a large bull elk southwest of Winslow over the weekend.

The elk was shot sometime between 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 and 7 o'clock the next morning. The poacher struck at the junction of Forest Service Roads 141H and 123 in Hunt Unit 5A, which is known as Battleground Ridge.

"This particular animal was one of the more highly prized by hunters in the area," says Wildlife Manager Garrett Fabian. "This is a huge loss for the hunt unit."

The poached animal was a 6x6 bull elk, meaning that it had very large antlers. It would have earned a legitimate, licensed hunter a score of just under 350 points.

Anyone with information about this poaching can call the department's Operation Game Thief hotline toll-free at (800) 352-0700. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $500, and all calls can remain confidential upon request.
