Listers,

First, let me thank you for maintaining and participating in an extremely useful and put-together site. The information presented here has been very helpful to me.

Somewhat spontaneously, this weekend I acquired a Tikka T3 in 300 WSM. I've never gone after elk before, but I'll be going next year. The few websites that I've read seem to suggest a 338 calibers or larger.

My question: with a 300 WSM, will I be undergunned? Should I use something else? Thank you.

I have a similar rifle. Short mag. 30 cal. It did a fine job and put my elk down with one shot.

As most people on this site will tell you, use an excellent bullet. Partition, accubond, and others work and will be fine for elk.

Look on the net and there are some great info. pieces on shot placement. I think this is important even with a good bullet.

good luck.

Logan

Anyone who says a .300 wsm is not an elk rifle is smoking crack! It's perfect for the job. Find a good 180 gr load that shoots well in your rifle and have at it.

Yes your .300 WSM is too small, so just box it up and sell it.

In fact to help you out, I'll give you $50 +shipping.

Nope, you've got a great elk gun. The only problem that I see is that I wont be going elk hunting with ya!

Is my 300 WSM too small?

That's like asking if your camo makes your butt look big.

Seriously, find a load your rifle likes, practice, put the bullet where it belongs, then get the BBQ hot.

Good luck.

300 WSM has to be one of the most popular cartridges out there right now. I agree with everyone else here, you won't have a problem with it.
