NM has been very good to us this year.

Myself, my wife, my oldest son and daughter all drew Javelina tags in NM this year.

We basically had one weekend to get it done and the unit we drew is about 4 hours from the house. I didnt get a chance to do any scouting though did hunt in one part of the unit for deer about 4 years ago.

This season did coincide with quail so we were able to also pick up a few scalies and Gambels.

The first morning we went into an area that someone had mentioned to us. We saw no pigs but did glass up 4 Desert Bighorns. That evening still no Javelinas. We took two trucks with my oldest son driving one and me driving the other and keeping in contact with radios.

My son spoke to a warden that day and he told us that there were not many Javelina in this area and he gave us a general idea where there were more of them (about 45 miles North).

This was the final weekend of a 2 week hunt so they were pretty spooky.

The next morning we went into the area he told us about. I was glassing everywhere with 15 power binocs on a tripod. By noon still we had seen no Javelina, but, we had seen where they had been eating prickly pear cactus.

Finally, in the 11th hour when we were considering going home I glassed a herd of Javelina about 3/4 miles away. We made a quick plan and started hiking. When we got 1 ridge away (about 200 yards) i left my oldest son and youngest and told him that myself, my daughter and wife were gonna get above them on the same ridge.

When he heard a shot he was to pick one out and shoot it.

When we climbed up the ridge we were within 50 yards of pigs. I told my 12 year old daughter to move to a better position and take her time and take a shot. She did just that and shot. All hell broke loose.

My son shot his pig from he adjacent ridge, I shot one and my wife got one as well. We all filled our tags.

Now the work started. We boned out one pig and gutted the others. me and my son carried out 2 pigs each on our backs luckily, my youngest (8) had come with us and had carried game bags.

We were beat but had a great outing.

Here are the pics.

I butcher everything myself. We have found the meat to be very good as well. We have had it in stews, stir fry, and some will go to sausage.

Great story and awesome pics!

Side note. You're family must be very good shots. It's very difficult to get 4 pigs out of one herd. That's quite an accomplishment!

Its pretty cool when a plan comes together (normally they dont). I knew my 17 year old son could make a 200 yard shot (he got his elk this year at 400 yards) and i knew my 12 year old daughter needed time to make a good shot.
So the plan was for her to shoot first ( she is a very carefull shot, it may take forever for her to shoot, but when she does she kills) and then everyone else to fire at will.
It was a rush.

These pigs i estimate weigh about 40lbs each.

Good account of the Hunt and glad you Posted the pics to go along with it. Makes it all the more memorable that the whole family was involved..even the youngest, though he was a non-hunter! Hey, you don't have to be packin' a weapon to be a Scout/Tracker/Packer! ALL hands are welcome in the field! :)
