Because javelina hate dogs and they will kill them. And you might get seriously hurt just being near the dog. I know this doesn't make sense because we're used to seeing large 300 lb boars fleeing from even the smallest of dogs.
In almost every case of humans attacked by javelinas, it's because they were out jogging with their dogs.

but surely a pack of large breed catchdogs could easily take a javelina down. and the danger of hunter or dogs getting hurt is there with boars as well. not arguing with you, as you said it doesnt make sense. you would think if the dogs can take on huge boars the javelina would be no problem.

I met a guy last weekend that uses his dogs in New Mexico for javalina. He's got a male silver weim as the chase dog and a big blue weim as the take down dog.

Javies are aggressive and gregarious; more often than not, they are in groups and will attack even if unprovoked.

As glasseye can tell you, the places I've seen javelina would tear a dog to pieces. most unfriendly terrain I've ever hunted, cactus of every variety imagineable.

i have hunted javalina twice. both times went like this...hike, hike, hike. glassing the entire time. locate a group, work our way to get the wind right, and then crabwalk to bowrange...twack!

i hunted a friends west texas ranch that is teeming with them. everymorning a group would be outside there house in the pecan trees. those would have been too easy, so the family gave them a stay of execution. my friend stalked his with the right wind, and a cigarette in his mouth. i was amazed.

the rancher had a team of the most muscular wiener dogs around. they would jog after us on the trucks. they would take on every thing, walking...except the javalina.

Rifleman hit the nail on the head .... unlike a hog .... javelina will tend to team up and not run, but to stand and fight. Hogs generally do not come back and help each other like a javie will. Another thing is that hogs can't turn back on themselves like a javie. A javelina will go back through his posterior to chew on whatever is back there wanting to fight. Hogs can turn and fight but not near as quick as a javie. I'm sure there are some folks that will use dogs on them but I'm also willing to bet that the life expectancy of those dogs are slim and none. I know all of my hog dog buddies in my neck of the woods hate the little boogers coming around their dogs.
