Hey Guys, how's everybody doing so far this weekend? Does anybody remember about a week ago or so, when Mario was asking questions about Pig hunting and Rifle calibers, etc.,? One of you guys suggested a book by Bob Robb, to him called "Hunting Wild Pigs in CA.", or something like that....and when I went to Barnes and Noble a few days ago, all they had in their database, was a couple of books by him, on Elk hunting and fishing! Where can I get a copy of that book or his newer version, Same Title only II ? Thanks for your help guys, this forum is GREAT! I'll see you all at the "Slam", I'm one of the 11 confirmed !

I believe the book is out of print again, so the best bet would be to try an auction, or someplace like www.alibris.com.

Good luck!

It's not out of print, you can get it here:

http://www.westernsportshop.com/Merchant2/..._Code=BKNHNTGEN

I picked up my copy in person since Western sports is in San Rafael, CA, but they also do mail-order for those farther away.

Good book and good info, I'm looking forward to my first hog hunt down at FHL in a few weeks.

cheers,
c

Hey speck, My buddy was cruising the internet and came across the turners Tejon Ranch hunts.. There is one scheduled on May 21 thru 23rd. The same time as the Hamslam if I remember correctly. The article also said that they would probably only need a map for the south side for their hunts. Are these guys gonna be hunting the south side the same time as the JHO members? How many hunters do they usually allow on the south side at one time? Getting peppered during dove season becouse of the crowds is one thing. Being touched by an 06 is another. Just wondering what you heard?

Never mind, I just saw where there were only 10 spots for that hunt.

Thanks for the heads up, Russ. I was under the impression that only our group and lease-holders would be on the South Side that weekend. But I guess, technically that statement is NOT in any of the emails I have from Barbara, so maybe I was just assuming.

Anyway, as you found out, there are only 10 spots in the Turner's hunts, and while they always fill up, I wouldn't anticipate too much extra crowding as a result... even if we fill our hunt.

I got my app.!

Me and a buddy will be sending money this week.

If someone still has some JHO decals and T-shirts for sale please bring em. This might be a good place to make some sales. I will buy at least one of each.

Thanks Dan

Well, if we were under the impression that JHO had sole access to the south side and not it turns out that lease holders and Turner's also has access, I guess that begs the question - just how many other folks will have access?

Hogskin,

Where you been? Hadn't heard from you in a while.

Anyway...

The leaseholders have access any time, so you often see them during the PORs. That's nothing new, and I have no idea how many there are. I don't think it's an issue.

The only surprise to me was the Turner's hunt, which is only 10 hunters anyway. I thought the Turner's hunts usually took place on the North Side, but even so... the impact is still minimal. I will be verifying with Barbara that the Turner's guys will be on the South Side.

During the March POR last year, in addition to the full contingent of 50 POR hunters, I believe the folks signed up for the Desert side were allowed to hunt the South Side. Someone unofficial told me that were as many as 25 extra hunters in the area. There were also lease holders hunting the area, including the fella that shot that HUGE boar during the weekend.

For all that, and the fact that many roads were impassible, crowding didn't seem to be a big deal except for the folks trying to hunt along the main roads. I saw other hunters the whole weekend, but never crossed paths or had to abandon a stalk due to pressure from other folks. I'm not saying it won't happen. All it takes is two hunters in the same spot to make a "crowd".

For the May hunt, unless we have unusual weather, the roads should all be passable and a LOT of ground will be open for hunting. I think we'll be OK.

Oh, I've been here a bit and hanging on another board (not a hunting board and if I told you what kind of board it is you might die in a fit of laughter so I won't). I'm still up in the air for the Ham Slam. If I can put a few more steaks in the freezer between now & then I'll probably be there. I don't know, it's not like I'll have to miss the mortgage payment to go and I'd love to camp out with some of you jokers, I'll just have to see how things go.

Oh, come on now! You can't do that to us... leave us hanging like that.

OK folks, time to start guessing what kind of board Hogskin has been visiting. Any takers?

Hmmm.. I'll go first. Does it have anything to do with muppets? Particularly, little green ones?

Listen smart-guy, there may be plenty of mileage left in the whosyourfroggy stunt you perpetrated on me but that doesn't mean you have to use it. Can't you leave me and my meager dignity alone?
<
Suffice it to say, have one look at me in person and then the board I've been hanging on and you'd be stunned. I ain't lettin' on anything more than that.

I'd love to do the JHO ham slam, I mean, I could really use some 4x4 lessons from the master. I'll let you know soon.

Well, time for another update.

Not a lot has changed in a week, except I've now received 13 paid apps out of 59 requests.

If you have paid, I have tried to remember to send out a confirmation email. However, those who know me know I have a pretty atrocious memory. So... if you have sent a check and application, and haven't heard from me yet, please feel free to shoot me an email and I can verify receipt of your check.

Oh, and I was gonna take another jab at Frogskin, but I ran out of clever repartee.

Dear Speck,

Thanks for taking the lead on what will sure to be a great hunt and even better memories. I hope everyone, including myself, has an opportunity to post his or her experience here.

Please send me an application. Depending on my schedule I may or may not be able to make the hunt. However, I will send payment for two spots. If I am unable to make it, I will donate (if o.k. and adhering to all requirements) my spots to a worthy cause.

Thank you in advance,

NI

Native Instinct,

Shoot me an email with your snail mail address. As far as donating your app fee, I don't think that's necessary (quite gracious, though). While I'd prefer that you wait until you're sure you can attend before sending it in, it's not like you're signing away your right to bail out. Doo-doo happens, and I understand that.

This does raise a question that hasn't really been asked, lately.

What about refunds?

Well, at this point and up to about two weeks before the event, I'll be glad to tear up any apps and checks if you need to bail. I understand that things come up unexpectedly. The checks are sitting in a strongbox in my office, and won't be deposited until I send them to Tejon. You will only be out one pig tag for the trouble.

However, once I send this stuff to Tejon, you may well be out of luck altogether. That's only fair, since at the point I send the apps off, that pretty much cuts anyone else out of applying. Once the checks are out of my hands, you're on your own with the Tejon Ranch to work it out.

That would be my second guess.
