Well, I am back at work, *sigh* after a great weekend. I saw lots of hogs for the weekend but never seemed to be able to put it together to stick one. Saturday night I worked a group and then lost them in the thick stuff about 30 mins before end of shooting. I continued working up wind trying to find them then ran out of time and headed back to the truck. Got to my truck about 15 mins past shooting time and 4 of them were less than 20 yards from my truck feeding around. Just the way my luck went this weekend.

My only shot was at 7:30 Friday morning. I was just sitting down overlooking a nice area after still hunting in and had hardly plunked my butt down when I see this pig coming right towards me about 100 yards away. I moved forward to get in his path of travel and he kept coming. About 60 yards out he turned left to run parallel with me heading up the ridge to bed. I closed in more and he was then moving away from me. I was inside 30 but he was walking pretty quickly and I was struggling to keep up with him without making noise. Finally he slowed and I was at full draw for about the next 30 yards trying to slip one in on him. He turned broadside and began feeding. I guessed him at 40 and released. I was a pissed at myself when the arrow sailed an inch or two right over his back. I chased him some more but couldn't catch up. I later used the laser range finder and found he was only 33 yards from me when I shot

As usualy though, it was a great time and FAR TOO MUCH Tekillya was consumed

As usual it was great hunt, I got a real nice meat pig and lost a big one that got away, but it was not from lack of effort. I would like to thank arrow slinger and lure diver for their help in the recovery of my pig and trying to find the pig that got away. Chopper once again thank you for the hospitality and a first class hunt.

I had a great time.
There were some really cool people there.
Orso, Speck, Bighorn and I stayed to hunt Sunday afternnon.
The weather started to cool again and clouds started rolling in.
We had good infow on where BDB had seen hogs and decided to give it a try.

DOH !!! I guess me chasing them around for 2 days was enough for them. Maybe they figured with only me there, that I would miss anyway but someone else might not

I wanna go back.

BDB, Thanks for the info, it just didn't work out that time for us.

Props to Bighorn for driving us home while I slept.
Good thing I don't snore.

I think the March hunt has some openings......Gyopo, you not snoring on the ride down must be a first....between you, bighorn, & orso...the roof was shaking and i swear one of you quit breathing for a couple minutes. Thought i might have to give ya CPR & let Lurediver administer the breathing.

OK, that dancing guy has no relation to my hunting... once again into the abyss, and out empty-handed. The dancing is more in reference to a really great time over the weekend with this bunch of JHOers. It was good to see those of you I already knew, and great to meet a couple of folks I hadn't run into yet... namely Lurediver and Gyopo.

My weekend wasn't a total loss anyway. Saturday was real slow for me, although I found a really great spot, I couldn't seem to get any pigs to come visit. I liked the spot so much that I kept going back to it... the hard-headed side of my nature just wouldn't let me quit.

Sunday morning, the spot paid off... well, almost. Just after full daybreak, I spotted a HUGE pig about 200 yards away, just heading off the end of the finger ridge I was hunting. I decided to boogie on up there and see what were the chances that it would be milling around within archery range. I had checked the area on Saturday, and knew there were some openings in the chapparal out there.

I kicked it in to get out there, and was moving pretty fast when I dropped into a saddle and heard the sound that made my freeze in my tracks. Hog grunts were coming from the brush all around me! I locked up, out in the middle of the dozer trail. I looked for the source of the grunts, when I noticed a hog's head sticking out of the brush about 25 yards up the hill from me.

I thought he had me pegged, but I guess I started looking like a tree to him, because he didn't run. He turned and walked halfway back into the brush, then stood and sniffed a little before turning around and coming back out. All I could see was his head, so I had no shot. Besides, he was looking right at me. But I had an arrow nocked and ready.

After a few moments, he decided I was not a threat, and stepped out onto the dozer trail. 25 yards is outside my comfort zone, and the way I had been shooting at the target on Saturday had my confidence level way down. But as a certain ass-shooting pig slayer said, you can't kill 'em if you don't shoot at 'em. He turned broadside, slightly quartering away and put his head down. I drew back on the recurve and let it fly!

The arrow flight was beautiful, arcing directly at the spot I'd picked about three ribs behind the shoulder. Suddenly, though, it seemed like the arrow was moving in slow-motion as the hog pivoted on his hind feet, directly out of the line of flight. The arrow glanced off his shoulder and buried in the dirt.

I started to curse at my bad luck, when I realized the hogs in the brush to my right were still grunting and moving around. I crouched and waited, hoping beyond hope that one would come out. They milled around there, just out of sight, for several long moments, until finally my scent must have drifted over and they crashed off through the chapparal.

Sunday evening, the fog rolled in thick and heavy, pretty much limiting my evening hunt to still-hunting in the canyon bottom. Even down there, after a while it became too thick to see more than 50 yards. I hunkered down under a tree over a fresh trail and hoped for the best until it got too dim to shoot, then headed out.

Overall, though, it was still a great weekend and a great hunt. Chopper's place is absolutely awesome. The company of good folks, the warmth of good spirits, and lots of food... well, how can you complain about that? So, here he is again...

You know I never touch that stuff, Rancho. I'm shocked and saddened by the implication.
