XDHunter-
Came in at noonish and ran into Hunter Pat and went out to the field.
Got into hogs about 1ish when I stuck my head in the brush and went in
about 20 yards and jumped them. right in front of me. They were bedded
down. I could not get a shot but stayed on
them for a bit and they just kept cirlcling me. Came out and went and found another herd on the other
side of the finger. Could hear them but could not see them. Waited till
dark and one of my other friends did get a shot just before dark and missed it.
Going back out again in the am to try again.

Hntboar, is that you in the room next to us at billeting with the Ford? We're in #3 if that's you.

Nothing for WEsty and me for hogs. We popped a nice tom bobcat yesterday. Ran into a fellow in 10 that said his buddy got a small hog yesterday out of a group of 10. Wtpops is hunting in the same area and he hasn't bumped into any hogs yet but plenty of good sign. Had venison burgers with Wtopos last night at his trailer in the campgroud for supper.

The quail are pretty thick, I had a covey go to roost next to me last night and we saw then head out this morning, hopping up a log to check us out.

Back at the room now for some lunch and then back out. No fog this morning but there was ice on the truck when we left. Sun came up and warmed it up fast today, everyone thinks the pigs bedded early.

Seen Live2Hunt and his buddies this morning. They saw a couple groups of hogs yesterday they said but no joy.

I was up yesterday for just the day hunting quail in 9. Came across quite a bit of pig sign that had been done within the past week. Seems like the pigs are definately active up there right now. Just need some more rain to keep them going.

Well the latest report for today, found the hogs again and went tunneling for 4 hours in the brush. Kept jumping them but no luck. They just kept circling me and moving before I could get a shot. Towards the end of the day we ended up sitting point along with everyone else in the area. All the good spots were taken. Decided to get a new spot till dark. Waited till about 4:45 and heard a noise behind me and guess what was standing to my right about 20 yards away? Yep a big 'o' hog! I tried to be sneaky but no luck and he saw me and I tired to get a shot off but could not get a good bead on him. Running though trees! Man was he big!

Caught up with Jesse and Westy and we hope to draw some blood tomorrow.

BTW- my friend who thought he missed last night, ended up going back and looking for blood and found the hop at the end of the brush patch. The boar wieghed in at 175 lbs. field dressed. Way to go Tom!

Anyway, we will post up tomorrow.

Sounds Like a great time fellows. Spectr 17 let me know when you are ready to come out with Bigworn and I. Birds, or Hogs is fine. Hogs are better but If the Bigworm is witih us he can dog a mean bird, Turkey or quail. We can hunt doves but my best spot is best on opening day for doves. I shot three boxes this year(dont shoot birds that well

If you want to shoot hogs with a bow, you will be on your own, cause I Cant sneak up on nothing with a rifle.

I'm sorely disappointed in you guys. There should be pictures of hogs hanging by now! If nothing else, I'd expect some of Jesse's personals to be flying from a flagpole or something!

Kill some hogs!

XDhunter (Eric) and his buddy Rem3006 whacked a big hog last night. They pulled off the blood in the dark and got back on tracking this morning. They felt good about finding the hog. We had a feast in their room of a big ham and all kinds of goodies Eric brought.

Westy and I hunted with Hntnboar this morning but nothing, the hogs may have given us the slip in the area we were in. Got some quail on the way out for lunch.

We saw an ambulance being led into 10 or 7 coming down Sulphor Srpings Rd. Not sure what it was about, hope no one got hurt back in there. Wasn't any shooting that we heard this morning so I'm not sure what happened.

Clear beautiful day with the temps going to be nice it looks like. Roads are all in good shape that we've seen.

Thanks for the offer Flatbroke. That sounds like fun and I'll holler when I can get a weekend off to drive up.

Sounds like you guys are having a blast over there. I wish I could have made it but will be going next weekend. If any of you guys could list the areas that you saw fresh signs or even saw pig in that would be great. Hope you all get a pig before then end of the weekend. Good luck to all.

Jesse-
Went to check out after I saw you and talked to Cody and Mark from Salinas at the game shack.
They just skinned thier hog that they got out of the area we were in today. They
ran into the herd by the water trough/wallow that we talked about on the left side of the
road. They saw the hogs from the dirt road about 7 am. There were about 10
of them and they only got one. It was a sow field dressed at 160 lbs.
Go figure huh? Good luck tomorrow.

Freminy-there is fresh sign in areas: 7, 10/13 and `16.

Bad news and good news. XDhunter tracked the big boar Rem3006 shot last night over several ridges this morning and finally lost the track. No blood from the copper holes at all. XDhunter thinks the boar is going to make it after clearing several steep ridges.

Good news is XD (Eric) just called and he just shot a monsta and it fell right where he hit it. Big black boar with nice tusks he said. Rem3006 is on his way to help load the toad. Pics and video of the tank tonight when they get to the skinning shack.

hntboar, I hiked around that wallow by the tank this afternoon/evening since the sign looked so good but never saw any hogs. They may still be hanging in there.

So far the pig count is 3 hogs for the weekend for the whole fort. Luke at the check in window said no areas are full but there are a lot of hunters here and just spread out with some being quail hunters, pig hunters, varmint hunters etc.

Mapmaker, I have some Hevi-Shot Foster 12 ga slugs for my smoothbore Rem 870. Hevi-Shot also makes a 12 ga. sabot round for rifled barrels. They are not copper but Hevi-shot. Foster slugs are shaped like a shuttlecock so they stabilize better in the wind and they have little fins on them like a mortar round to help too. They can be shot through a improved or gauge choke and are a little better than just a plain slug in a smoothbore for accuracy from my experience.

Westy had some Winchester Premiums 12 ga. copper slugs he patterned but he said they were a mess on paper, 8" groups was the best he could do. He bought some Remington rifled copper slugs but hasn't patterned them yet. His shotgun is a Rem 870 with a rifled barrel and scope.

I'll be looking around for more samples of non lead 12 ga slugs to test at the SHOT Show in couple weeks.

quick note on copper shotgun rounds. I shot the biggest pig I've ever seen with Federal loaded 3/4oz. Barnes slugs. The boar (over 300lbs) took two slugs at very close range; about 20 yards. The pedals from the hollow point slugs ripped off at impact. Even at that range the slug didn't fully penetrate the chest. The boar only went a few yards but thrashed around in the brush for quite a while after the being hit. The slugs did group ok in my rifled bore; about 4 inch groups at 100 yards.

Thanks for the FHL report, can't wait to see the pics!

Hello Weekender21,

Thanks for the honest report on those copper slugs. My teenager shoots a Rossi 20 GA single shot with 3" rifled barrel. The 20 Gauge in Remington copper sabot is only 2-3/4" and Federal Barnes Copper is 3". Guess, I had better go with the Barnes 3" 20 GA Copper at 1900 fps?

Back when my boy was age 14 he shot a small boar in TA29 with Remington Lead Sluggers in the same Rossi, and it took him 5 shots before the pig stopped squealing. We don't want any repeats of that ordeal.

Thanks Jesse,

It will be interesting to see what's new for 12 Gauge non-lead Sabots.

Back from the skinning shack. Eric's hog weighed 180 lbs gutted. THere was another big boar in there killed tonight that went about the same on weight from area 9. This boar had a club rear foot and no nuts. Choppers were about 2 1/2" - 3". Eric's boar didn't have that big of ivory for some reason but he had torn up ears from fighting and a bald spot on his head. The .300 WSM went diagonally across the heart region and left pencil size holes. No recovery on the bullet but it did blow the heart up.

4 hogs total now. 2 of them big boars

One hunter at the skinning shack said a quail hunter's dog got attacked by a big boar in 10/13. The quail hunter had to shoot the hog after it sprung up from a bed when the dog trotted by to get a downed quail and the boar pinned the dog to the ground and started slashing it. The hunter said the quail hunter took the dog to the vet and the dog should be okay.

Was that your boy's first pig Richard?

Time for some hot food, a long nap and back at it again in the morning.

Hi Jesse,

Wow, 4 hogs in one weekend. That's great! Thanks for the report. Yes, that was my boy's first and only boar. We talked it over later, and decided that hunting boar with a shotgun was the most dangerous thing that we do. So, we gave up on it. You can see by the wound in the rear side of that boar that it was headed towards my boy when he shot it. He missed the head shot and grazed the pig's rear side. You can also see where the plastic sabot hit just below the main wound. It was a close shot!

We are still waiting to lean more about shotgun slug ballistics, so we can get back into TA29. Meanwhile, we hunt in TA24 with a 30-06 and scope. Much safer, to say the least. Be ware, those pigs move through the tall grass like a bowling ball.
