Fellas,

I've received four different requests about bringing "ride-alongs" or non-hunting partners along on the Tejon Ranch hunts. There's nothing wrong with asking...in fact, I'm glad you did. Might save us all some grief.

Tejon Ranch DOES NOT allow ride-alongs or non-hunters on any of the "public" hunts. That includes all of the JHO organized trips, both rifle and archery. The way it works right now is that you have to pay the entry fee AND provide a tag in order to access the ranch during these hunts.

There are several good reasons for this, not the least of which is that a non-hunter fills a slot that could otherwise be taken by a paid hunter....especially in the archery hunts with limited bunk space.

The other rationale is that there's no efficient way to police the field, or to ensure that non-hunting partners aren't actually hunting. While I realize that this probably doesn't apply to the folks who've asked, it is a legitimate concern at the ranch. It's a shame, of course, that everyone has to be penalized because a few people can't be trusted, but that's how rules work. If you catch someone breaking the rules, kick him/her a couple extra times for everyone else, please. They are the reason we have to deal with restrictions like this.

These hunts are for HOGS ONLY. Anyone caught shooting anything else (coyotes, squirrels, birds, etc.) will be escorted from the premises. No refund, no apology, no nothing. You've signed an agreement to this effect when you completed the application form.

If you witness anyone breaking this rule, or any others, please notify me directly, and/or notify Tejon Security (we'll get the phone numbers during orientation). If there's some reason you don't want anyone to know it was you who reported, that's fine. But so far JHO has been stellar in staying out of trouble and in the general good graces of the Ranch. This is a good reflection on JHO, and also on me, personally, as the organizer and guarantor for our group. I want to keep it that way.

There will be Leaseholders and Tejon Members on the ranch during both hunts. They're operating under a slightly different set of rules, but if you see something that looks wrong (like shooting a condor), send up a signal. The biggest threat to hunting at Tejon Ranch right now is rule-breakers and scofflaws.

The other question I've been getting a lot is about the hunt times and dates.

First, the Memorial Day hunt:

Stay tuned for specifics, but as of right now I'm planning to be at the Flying J at 0830 Friday morning (5/26) and will meet up with whoever wants to pop in for the traditional pre-hunt breakfast. The Flying J is in Gorman (I believe), right at the top of the Tejon Pass. As far as I know, there's nothing else really close by, so it's pretty hard to miss. If you're coming from the South and you hit Lebec, you've passed it. If you're coming from the North it's the second exit after the Ranch Office.

If you can't, or don't want to meet for breakfast, we usually meet at the Ranch Office for mandatory check-in and orientation at around 1030 or 1100, depending on Barbara's schedule. I'll have the official word on this as soon as I get it myself.

Once the orientation is complete, we'll roll to the gate. Once you get inside the gate, you're hunting. Most of us head on down and set up camp, but you're welcome to hit the side trails or head into the high country as soon as we're checked in.

The hunt ends at the END OF SHOOT TIME on Sunday. If you haven't tagged out, you're welcome to hunt until dark on Sunday. That's what you've paid for. You can ask around, but more than one JHO member has tagged his hog at the last minute....including yours truly.

If you're staying until dark, we'll want to coordinate so I know where you are. We'll iron out details when the time comes.

Entrance and exit is through a locked gate. There will probably only be one or two keys. I'll have one, and will probably assign one to someone else. You can't get in or out without a key. We'll discuss this more at the hunt, but you should come prepared with all the critical necessities for spending all day on the ranch. Ideally, you'll be prepared to spend the entire weekend onsite.

Now for the archery hunt:

Again, I plan to meet at the Flying J at 0830. Anyone who wants to can meet me there. And again, we'll roll to the Tejon Ranch Office at around 1030 or 11 to do orientation. This is mandatory..you can't skip it.

After orientation, we'll roll to the North Gate as a group.

This hunt is also the entire two and a half days, and you're welcome to hunt until you tag out...or until it gets dark on Sunday.

During the Archery Hunt, a Tejon Guide will be assigned to us. He will provide meals, information, and general assistance throughout the weekend. While this varies from guide to guide, this hunt is NOT a guided hunt so the assigned guide may or may not actually accompany some of us into the field. The guide will be available to let us on and off the ranch, or they may provide all of us with keys. I believe they're still ironing out the details on this aspect. There are more gates on the North Side, so it looks like each driver will need a key.

Okie dokie then...

Anyway, if you have more questions about the hunt, feel free to post up or shoot me an email. There's a ton of info on past Tejon threads too, so you can always do a search.

I'm going to lock this topic, so if you have replies put them in one of the other Tejon Hunt threads. It's getting close to time to start up the Tejon 07 thread in the Events forum too!

Hey fellas,

Every year we consider cooking up some kind of T-shirts for the JHO/Tejon POR, but it never works out.

Usually for custom shirts, I would have to order a big pile of shirts, way in advance, and then I have to hope like heck I have enough guys interested to pay for them. Too much risk and never enough time, so I never did it.

Anyway, this year is a little different. Eric Mayer has offered the services of his shirt-printing business, Hi-Way 395 Gear, and can make up shirts for individuals...on fairly short notice and one-at-a-time. This means you can order one shirt or 30. Shirsts are available in long and short-sleeve. He's also created a custom design for our hunt group.

So with only two weeks until the big JHO/Tejon POR and the following JHO/Tejon Archery hunt, I'm announcing that shirts can be ordered online now.

Go to the Hi-way 395 Gear website, check out the shirts, and put in your orders.

For this event, Eric is giving us a price break and basically charging just enough to cover his costs.

Hey all,

Every year I get a lot of guys interested in doing a JHO POR earlier than the late spring/early summer hunt I usually put together. I tend to back away from winter hunts because the wet weather, fog, and cold can make that place pretty treacherous. However, since so many of you have expressed interest, I decided to give it some thought.

Generally, Tejon doesn't do any private group hunts during the regular hunting seasons, which include upland birds that run through January. I talked to Barbara, and she's going to speak with her boss to see if maybe they can squeeze us in at the tail end of the season for a hog hunt, before the regular PORs start up in February, 2008.

The dates we have penciled in are January 25, 26, and 27.

What I need to know is if there is really enough interest to do this hunt. In order to get the POR price, I need to have a minimum of 25 hunters.

So, whaddaya say? Interested? Would you do a hunt in January? Would you do a January hunt AND a May hunt (May dates are already confirmed)?

Damn, MJB... forgot to check the cost. It does seem like I heard it was going up to $450, but failed to verify when we talked. I will check.

Chirohunter, give me a call if you get a minute. Number on file.

Quail season always runs thru the last Sunday in January unless Tejon ends their season early. Hopefully we can still get a date and enough people for an early hunt.

Just verified that the cost this year has increased to $450. Not bad, considering the cost of other private hunts in CA... and no place else could host this many of us at once.

January sunset is nice and early, so even those of us who like to hunt the hell holes should be back in camp and well fed before 0200. Well... most of us.

OK, I deleted the old date topic, since there's only one hunt left... May 23-25.

The hunt is currently open, and I have only received a handful of paid apps to date. If you sent me a check, you know who you are.

If you want an app, send me an email with the following info:

Name:
Address:
Phone:
Number of hunters in your party:

Applications are only available in hard-copy. If you just send me an email asking for an application without the appropriate information, it will be deleted.

Apps MUST be received in my mail by May 2nd. They must be complete, and all information, forms, payment, and completed tag MUST be included. An incomplete or incorrectly filled out form may very well mean NO HUNTING FOR YOU. I don't have time to track you down, and Barbara has said she won't be doing it any more either. Take the time to get it right. Read the instructions. And ASK if you run into a problem.

The hunt is $450 for two and a half days. If you need more information, please go back to the top of THIS Thread and read in its entirety. I am not going to keep rewriting the same stuff over and over again. I hate the way this sounds, but you have no idea how many times I get asked the same questions in email or on the forum... it's all right here. Please take the time to read it.

The rules haven't changed, except for the fact that lead ammo is banned at Tejon Ranch... for any firearm. That includes rifles, shotguns, pistols, or muzzleloaders. NO LEAD.

If, after reading ALL of the information on this thread, you still have questions, THEN send me an email or post up and ask.

OK I'm new to this pig hunting thing but I would like to join the May hunt. Can I use my bow or do I have to bring a rifle (which I don't own). Also don't have a 4X4 so I might be hoofing it. I do have a truck and toyhauler if anyone would like to trade accomodations for a ride in a 4X4. Thanks again.
