Fellas,
I've received four different requests about bringing "ride-alongs" or non-hunting partners along on the Tejon Ranch hunts. There's nothing wrong with asking...in fact, I'm glad you did. Might save us all some grief.
Tejon Ranch DOES NOT allow ride-alongs or non-hunters on any of the "public" hunts. That includes all of the JHO organized trips, both rifle and archery. The way it works right now is that you have to pay the entry fee AND provide a tag in order to access the ranch during these hunts.
There are several good reasons for this, not the least of which is that a non-hunter fills a slot that could otherwise be taken by a paid hunter....especially in the archery hunts with limited bunk space.
The other rationale is that there's no efficient way to police the field, or to ensure that non-hunting partners aren't actually hunting. While I realize that this probably doesn't apply to the folks who've asked, it is a legitimate concern at the ranch. It's a shame, of course, that everyone has to be penalized because a few people can't be trusted, but that's how rules work. If you catch someone breaking the rules, kick him/her a couple extra times for everyone else, please. They are the reason we have to deal with restrictions like this.
These hunts are for HOGS ONLY. Anyone caught shooting anything else (coyotes, squirrels, birds, etc.) will be escorted from the premises. No refund, no apology, no nothing. You've signed an agreement to this effect when you completed the application form.
If you witness anyone breaking this rule, or any others, please notify me directly, and/or notify Tejon Security (we'll get the phone numbers during orientation). If there's some reason you don't want anyone to know it was you who reported, that's fine. But so far JHO has been stellar in staying out of trouble and in the general good graces of the Ranch. This is a good reflection on JHO, and also on me, personally, as the organizer and guarantor for our group. I want to keep it that way.
There will be Leaseholders and Tejon Members on the ranch during both hunts. They're operating under a slightly different set of rules, but if you see something that looks wrong (like shooting a condor), send up a signal. The biggest threat to hunting at Tejon Ranch right now is rule-breakers and scofflaws.
The other question I've been getting a lot is about the hunt times and dates.
First, the Memorial Day hunt:
Stay tuned for specifics, but as of right now I'm planning to be at the Flying J at 0830 Friday morning (5/26) and will meet up with whoever wants to pop in for the traditional pre-hunt breakfast. The Flying J is in Gorman (I believe), right at the top of the Tejon Pass. As far as I know, there's nothing else really close by, so it's pretty hard to miss. If you're coming from the South and you hit Lebec, you've passed it. If you're coming from the North it's the second exit after the Ranch Office.
If you can't, or don't want to meet for breakfast, we usually meet at the Ranch Office for mandatory check-in and orientation at around 1030 or 1100, depending on Barbara's schedule. I'll have the official word on this as soon as I get it myself.
Once the orientation is complete, we'll roll to the gate. Once you get inside the gate, you're hunting. Most of us head on down and set up camp, but you're welcome to hit the side trails or head into the high country as soon as we're checked in.
The hunt ends at the END OF SHOOT TIME on Sunday. If you haven't tagged out, you're welcome to hunt until dark on Sunday. That's what you've paid for. You can ask around, but more than one JHO member has tagged his hog at the last minute....including yours truly.
If you're staying until dark, we'll want to coordinate so I know where you are. We'll iron out details when the time comes.
Entrance and exit is through a locked gate. There will probably only be one or two keys. I'll have one, and will probably assign one to someone else. You can't get in or out without a key. We'll discuss this more at the hunt, but you should come prepared with all the critical necessities for spending all day on the ranch. Ideally, you'll be prepared to spend the entire weekend onsite.
Now for the archery hunt:
Again, I plan to meet at the Flying J at 0830. Anyone who wants to can meet me there. And again, we'll roll to the Tejon Ranch Office at around 1030 or 11 to do orientation. This is mandatory..you can't skip it.
After orientation, we'll roll to the North Gate as a group.
This hunt is also the entire two and a half days, and you're welcome to hunt until you tag out...or until it gets dark on Sunday.
During the Archery Hunt, a Tejon Guide will be assigned to us. He will provide meals, information, and general assistance throughout the weekend. While this varies from guide to guide, this hunt is NOT a guided hunt so the assigned guide may or may not actually accompany some of us into the field. The guide will be available to let us on and off the ranch, or they may provide all of us with keys. I believe they're still ironing out the details on this aspect. There are more gates on the North Side, so it looks like each driver will need a key.
Okie dokie then...
Anyway, if you have more questions about the hunt, feel free to post up or shoot me an email. There's a ton of info on past Tejon threads too, so you can always do a search.
I'm going to lock this topic, so if you have replies put them in one of the other Tejon Hunt threads. It's getting close to time to start up the Tejon 07 thread in the Events forum too!
