I was on the southside last weekend saw 40+ pigs on Friday evening they were out the last 3 hours of daylight. Saturday morning they were out for 2 hours after sunrise saw another 20+, the evening saw 12, Sunday am about 10 pigs. Our morning hunts were over by 7:30-8. Sunrise is about 5:20 and it's dark by 8:45pm not much time for sleep so a nap is a must if you get one on your evening hunt. Did see about 12 Yotes chasing anything but never took a shot while we were pig hunting. We also saw more elk than deer which was odd, one nice bull 5 x 5 at 20 yards under an oak hanging with 2 smaller bulls that were 2 x 2. We also ran across a really big dead elk carcass in the bottom of a canyon, of course it was in the TMV area. I guess the elk didn't know about the new rules.:lol bashing sign:

It was 73 on Friday and 85 on Saturday then in the 90's when I left on Sunday about 1pm.
As it got hotter they were out in the am longer than the evening hunt. They were low or out in the opening for a very short time then they would walking under the trees to stay out of the sun. The grass is thick and about knee high so watch for snakes we didn't see any but you never know. We were on pigs on every hunt, we also walked one pig bedding area on Saturday 1-3pm got on 4 pigs but they were too small, they did give us 50-30 yard shots.
Sunday my buddy scored a nice sow off of Tunis ridge, he passed on pigs on Friday by live oak ridge and missed on Saturday am on Squirrel ridge.
We saw some really big pigs but they were in the bottom of some of the deepest canyons on the southside. Didn't see any piglets and all of the sows were dry and didn't look prego but your mileage may very.
The sow that we did get had been shot in the top of the spine a few months ago, hide had healed up but was missing 2 bones on the top of the spine with some blood shot back strap most likely copper shot while the pig was running. So don't shoot running pigs it's a waste of time, money and your tag.
I don't have any pictures but may get some video if my buddy has some time this week.....I'll post it up if it comes in time for your hunt.

Lots of members have been saying they just aren't seeing as many pigs this year but we are having no problem. The pigs just seem to be in different areas and not as many pigs in the old honey holes. My guess is if you had food, cover and water right next to your bedding area why would you go anywhere. So look deep and go big!!!!

Helpful hints during the day get to know the roads, don't pass on any pigs on Friday night and when you spot the pigs get on them ASAP or they will be gone.

Have some fun and hope the temps cool down for you.:smiley_yahoo:

Just got home from a great central coast hunt. Stay tuned for more, but the Speckmisser just made his Television debut. :dancin-red:

Now I gotta clean gear, re-sharpen knives, and load the camper for Tejon! Dammit, is it time yet?

Thanks for the update, Mark! Good to hear the critters are out and about.

All, Eric WILL have shirts again. My computer has crashed and burned again, so I don't have his website address handy, but you can order your shirts there. Sorry for the last minute notice, but this all came together kind of quickly and I've been offline for a while.

I'll update ASAP, but I'm still getting my own system back online.

I need two x-larges please.

Can we drive the Rino straight out from Bear Trap Rd from camp? Or do we have to drive it to a drop off point on a dirt road? Hopefully its straight from camp.

I am packed and ready to go.

See you guys Friday at the Flying J about 0700.

No, she was all black. Hope the cool temps work out for you guys. And be prepared for a deep hike in the thick stuff, thats where we had seen most of the really big hogs.

My buddy did have the sweet road shot but missed on Saturday morning. The story goes like this, we had just got to one of our glassing spots just before first light. We get out of the truck put the gear on and we see cows right where we need to walk to get to the edge of the box canyon. As we walk down the road a bit not to spook the cows down the canyon we see two pigs coming into the road heading towards the canyon a small blond pig and a decent size black pig both were eating the wild oats. We stop and watch the pigs hit the road and walk up the road away from us. I'm thinking perfect we can run after them when they go behind a little rise in the road. My buddy gets the bow ready and we start running up to the rise. As we both crest the rise we don't see them right in front of us but they have moved away from the canyon and start to feed again off the road to the left. I grab the video cam and follow behind my buddy who puts down the bow and grabs my 270win. He stalks the pigs to about 65 yards and gets on one knee the pigs have no Idea we are there and he lets one go. Miss!!!!! and the pigs split, the black runs to the canyon and the other heads to Squirrel canyon road. He proceeds to empty the 270 at the slow running pig. I let him go and waste my copper and later remind him how stupid it is to shoot at running pigs. A lot of the times if the pigs never see you they stop and give you one look back to see what the heck was going on. So we look at the video to see if he just wasted a tag, we see that all of the shots missed the pig, some behind, over its back and two in front, I think it was pig fever. That lead to a lot of teasing on how he can't shoot a rifle but put a bow in his hand and he can kill Squirrels at 66yards...go figure. On Sunday when he shoots his pig and found the copper shot on the pig from months before he realized another reason why it doesn't pay to shoot at running pigs.

Sorry no pictures or video yet........ make sure you guys aren't as lame on the pictures as I am.

Good luck!!

Straight from camp, it's no different than your truck or jeep.

*Shirt Orders are now complete - I'll see you guys in the morning!!*

The shirts are Anvil 6.1oz Heavy Weight, 100% pre-shrunk cotton, in Sand color. They are $15.00 each (2XL & 3XL are $16.00 each)(price includes tax).

This year, instead of ordering online, shoot me an email at info@jpdtees.com and let me know the following:

Name
Phone #
Number of shirts
Size(s)

I will bring them up to the Flying J on Friday morning and get them to everyone. You can pay me then, or send me a check when you get home.

Please email me if you have any questions, so we keep this thread clear of non-hunt information.

Thanks!!

Make sure and bring some tick spray or soak your clothes in Permonon. The ticks are still out. I'll have some Permonon if anybody forgets.

Just one more note...

Meeting is 0700 at the Flying J, or 0830 at the South Gate. If there's any reason you can't be there on time, shoot me a note ASAP, so we can make arrangements. If I don't hear from you, and you're late, you'll need to go to the Tejon Office and get in touch with Barbara for your orientation and access papers. There is minimal phone service once I'm on the property, so you'll have to coordinate entry with Barbara when she has time to take you over and let you in.

Looks like it'll be reasonably cool for a change. Windy, though... plan to wear layers. That breeze can be downright frigid up on the higher ridges.

I'm hitting the road in a few hours, but should have phone and email for the rest of the day.

We'll see what we can do for ya there, Hatchet. I know you get a little green and weak in the knees at the sight of hog blood, so we'll try to keep the pictures nice and clean with those sweet little piggies.
