The coyote hunts have been a kick and I think that they'll get even better going forward (when we start to kill some coyotes).  How about a pig hunt along the same lines?  I'm at a bit of a loss for the location but somewhere near the mid central state could allow both us SoCal guys to make it and meet up with some of the NorCal guys.

Specmisser - any ideas on some spots?

Public Land?  Or could we get a deal with enough people from one of the private ranches?

I think someone mentioned trying to get Tejon Ranch to do a special hunt for us?

Who has the contacts to pull some strings.

I was thinking public but we could probably hit one of the bigger private ranches and get them to give us a deal.  Most are $350-500 so if we could promise them 10-20 guys we might get that down to $200-250.  Just a guess...

Has anyone else turned in their application for the hunt on Santa Cruz island?  FullSack and I put in ours for some time in March.  If any other guys put in for March and get picked, it would be nice to know we are going out with fellow JHPers.

Foulshot,

My brother-in-law and I put in for period 3 (Mar 25-27).  Neither of us has ever hunted pig, and we are very hopeful, but I think the odds are against us.

If we do get selected, I hope to run into some other JHP'ers on the island.

Good Luck

I'm a new guy here but I have hunted pigs for quite some time and there is nothin' I'd rather do.  It would be great to meet everyone.  Whats the scoop on the coyote hunts?  When is the next one?

I must have misread the instructions.  I didn't know you could pick a date for the island pig hunt.  My brother and I sent in an application.  We were expecting to be assigned a date.  Wonder how the selection process works....

Foulshot/TFCoyote:

I also put in the Period 3.  It's looking like the odds of getting drawn are about one in twenty or twenty-five?  But what-the-hay, you can't win if you don't play.

I'd be interested in doing a pig hunt. I think the best chance of success is on private property.

Songdog, let me know if you want the number of the guide I used. I think he can handle large groups.

FHL seems to be in the middle and its not too expensive (if you don't have annual pass) $25 for weekend pass.  I think its probably the best place to hunt in regards to success and public access.    Just have to hope that there are enough areas open to aacomodate everyone.  Also, there is always the chance that they could not open on some weekends, but I would also not oppose a ranch hunt.

A couple of months ago, Eric Meyer said that he knew of someone he could talk to at Tejon Ranch.  With all of the reports of the high success rate (40%+) I'd be in favor of going there.  Maybe if we could put together enough people, they would book us as a group.....hronk

I think the DFG ought to permit us a special JHP hunt of Sant Cruz Island.  We would be doing them a favor by seriously reducing the swine population, and saving taxpayer money by not having to hiring professional hunters.  THAT would be a party.  All in favor.....

You can count me in. Where and when , I don't mind driving, as long as it promises to be a fun weekend.

Looks like a good time and a chance to meet a lot of interesting people.  I think a private ranch would fill the bill. Count me in.

I like Dakota's idea of a Santa Cruz Island Hunt,  but the people we need to sweet-talk are the Nature Conservancy.  They own most of the island and they want the pigs eradicated.

Anyone got connections with TNC or the NPS?

Wow,

Spend a couple days offline, and look what I missed!

Songdog, great idea!  It's been bounced around a couple of times, and certainly deserves a follow-up.

I think the Santa Cruz Island idea would be great, but I also don't think it's really realistic...unless someone really has an in.   Anything is possible with the right connections.

I'm all for public land, although a spot that would host us all on relatively short notice might be tricky.  FHL could be fun, but how many of us can be in an area at one time, and would they reserve an area?  Any of you FHL regulars know the answers to these?

Someone earlier in the thread suggested looking into cut rates at a private place.  I think that's the most realistic idea.  I know several of you have mentioned relationships with Boaring Experiences and Hogs Wild.   Both of those operations are in Central Coast (King City/Coalinga) and would be fairly middle ground for South and North Californians.  With 20 or so folks, I can't imagine the operators wouldn't be willing to do a discount rate.  Anyone want to volunteer to talk to these operators?

Tejon is a little further south, but I'd certainly be willing to make the drive.  I've been in that area a few times, and it's a beautiful place... would love to hunt it.

Oh yeah.

SDHNTR, welcome to the board!

Speck,
Thanks for the Welcome.  I have hunted many times with Frank Morasci in King City and always have a great time.  I know some others have hunted with him too.  I have hunted with groups of 8 or so with Frank but I dont know if he could or would want to handle a group much bigger than that.  But who knows?  I think for an organized large-group hunt, the Tejon would be the way to go.  Lets do it.

Really just moving this back to the top of the list, with another call for volunteers/contacts.  Anyone in with a guide who'd be willing to call and find out about a group hunt?

The fallback would be a public land area.   I suppose we could camp centrally then spread out to hunt.  In that case, maybe Clear Creek is a good bet.
