Man, ya'll make me wish I lived in California, well..a little. If some of ya'll want to try a Texas hog hunt in the future, I know a great place that takes groups of 4-5 hunters. $130/day includes lodging, stands, feeders, help with tracking and field care. Maybe the semiconductor industry will recover and I can make a trip to Cali for a JHP trip!

Sounds like fun I have yet to get the chance or the excuse to go hog hunting so count me in.  I just need to know the location and the dates.  I'm sure whatever everyone decides will be good.

Spoke to a couple of guide services at the ISE yesterday.  Sounds like most of them would be willing to take on a smaller group (less than 15), but all of them said "Give us a call and we'll talk."

A question.  How many of you guys would be willing/able to do this at a cost of between $400-$700 for a weekend?  Don't hesitate to say no, because I'd rather have an event on public land where we could all attend than have to limit folks just because they can't afford it.  But if everyone can handle the cost reasonably, our odds of taking a couple of pigs would be much better on private property.

I KNOW some of you guys have first person contact with guides and services, or you're repeat customers.  Now's the time to use those contacts.

I'm gonna start looking at dates this week.  The iron is hot, so to speak, and I'd rather get this going sooner than later...  probably talking about a March hunt date.

I'd prefer to keep it around $200-300, since we can do a Pig O Rama at Tejon for $300.00 if we can't find a better deal.

Bishop,

When is the next Pig-o-rama.  They just had one, I think, so is there another before summer?

Hey guys refresh my memory.  Are the "Pig O Ramas" 1 or 2 day hunts.  What all do you get for the $300?
Thanks
Bill

I'm not sure when the next one is, but last time I talked to them they said they were going to do one every 2-3 months. They start at around noon friday for checkin and end at sunset sunday.

The next Pig-o-rama is this weekend.  We could check on the following one.  They haven't published any dates yet so we might be able to get in early.

They divide the ranch up into several sections for the pig-o-ramas.  Depending on how many people we had, we could try and secure one whole section.  I don't know how many people per section they have but I think it's normally between 50-100 hunters in 3-5 sections (20-30 per).  I don't think that crowding is an issue.

It would be good to get a real count of people that would be willing to plunk down the $300 to make it.  At least we could go to Don Gievet and have a fairly firm number.

It would cost you $300 plus the $15 insurance policy.  The hunt is 2.5 days, one pig per person.

The other thing that would go with this that needs to be considered is that going as a group to a private ranch is different than a bunch of us meeting out on some public land for some coyotes.

Everyone that I've met here has been a good, upstanding guy that I'd hunt with again.  Unfortunately with 1600+ members, there's bound to be a couple of bad eggs in there and that would reflect on 1.) the group as a whole and 2.) Jesse since it's his board.

I don't have the answer as to how to prevent this from being a problem but I'd hate to see 20-25 of us make the hunt and have one less than forthright person do something stupid and get the whole group and/or Jesse in trouble with the Tejon (or whatever ranch) people.

I think the best bet for a good chance at a pig would be the Tejon on a Pig-O-Rama hunt. Lots of hogs, good success rate, good camping and a chance to win the $500.00 prize with biggest hog. Everyone would be responsible for their own payment so we don't have to collect any down payments.

Fort Hunter Liggett has a lower success rate, $75.00 for annual pass. The kicker is you don't know what areas are open until the Wednesday or Thurday before the weekend. The fort can also shut down in an emergency. We also probably couldn't get all the group in one training area but I don't see that  being a problem.

Renting a ranch for a group rate would probably be about $400.00 to $500.00 per person. Someone would have to collect the down payments and fill the quota to make sure we payed on time. I simply don't have the time to do this part of a private ranch hunt nor do I want the headache of trying to get X amount of down payments collected.

I just called Larry at Hogs Wild near Paso Robles. He can get 10 rifle hunters in for $425.00 each for a Fri afternoon to Sunday afternnon hunt. No Dogs. No tropyh fees. Dates open are 1st and 2nd weekend of May and 2nd 3rd and 4rth weekends of June. May and June are best times there.

With the trespass fees these hog guides and ranches pay they won't cut much off their prices for a group since their fees are already set.

If we're going to do a private ranch hunt, better be quick about it because the slots are filling fast for the best 2002 spring hunts.

I've been out of the loop for a month or so working with my mom's insurance company for her house, but I will give Don Geivet a call tomorrow and see if there is something Tejon can do for us.  I think for sheer number of pigs and size of property, you cannot go wrong.  The only issue would be cost and their willingness to do something for us alone.

I'll let you know tomorrow evening.

Okay, I spoke to Sandy this morning at Tejon.  They have guided hunts with full lodging and meals for $650.00 a person and the first date would be sometime in May.  I think that is a bit pricey for most people.  The next Pig-O-Rama is in April and would be $300.00 a person with camping, etc.  They allow alot of people into these hunts (as stated above), but since the dates have not been released the weekend of this hunt is completely open.  I am sure they can accomodate everyone who would like to go, but we would have to jump on it.

I will be in Texas around the time of the hunt so it is most likely I won't be there, but if there is enough interest I will post the contact and signup information (I'm trying to keep this hushed until we decide).

So, please let me know what you would like to do.  Jesse has a good option as well.

See ya,

Eric

Well, this just in...

First though, thanks Eric, for making the calls.  The Pig-o-rama in April sounds like the best deal for all involved.

Unfortunately for me, I'm in crunch mode right now, and can't make plans for anything inside of May.  So I'll have to live vicariously through you folks if you do that one.

Other than that, I'm day-tripping on public land only until the crunch is over at work.

I will have to pass in April, but I would jump on anything in June or July. May would be 50/50....Hronk

I think that I'll try for the April Pig-o-rama either way.  I'm not sure if they let you take campers up there but if they do and anyone else is headed up, I can sleep a couple of extra guys.

Songdog,
They have room and allow campers, trailers, etc. I just got back from the weekend hunt and it's worth the $$$. In the North side they even had water hook ups, which made it nice.
