Pig-O-Rama aka Ham Slam.

The Tejon Ranch will be hosting a “Pig-O-Rama” April 12-14 and May 10-12 and will pay a $500 cash prize for the largest hanging, field-dressed hog taken during the 2 1/2-day events. Entry and hunting fee is $300 per person and entitles the hunter to shoot one pig. In addition, all hunters must have a ranch insurance policy (an additional $10). Those who have hunted the Tejon since Sept. 1, 2001 should already have the insurance policy and do not need to purchase another one.

The event will run from noon Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday, and all hunters must check in and out each day of the event. This is one of a series of Pig-O-Ramas the Tejon will be hosting over the coming months with events about every two months, according to Don Geivet, game manager at the Tejon. For more information, contact  Sandy, Tejon Ranch Company, P.O. Box 1000, Lebec, CA 93243, PH#  (661) 663-4209.

The pig population is booming at Tejon, past hunts are running around 40% success rate. This is probably your best chance for a pig for the lowest price I know of, plus if you shoot the heaviest hog you pay for your trip almost 2x times over.

I can make the April hunt but the May Pig-O-Rama I'l lbe turkey hunting. If you guys want, start a JHP Pig-O-Rama thread for the May date.

1:24,000 topo maps for Tejon, these 7.5 minute quads cover most of the ranch.

One Track,

I don't think there is anyway these hunts are going to shoot out the population. Those hogs propagate at a pace beyond what hunters can take at a 40% or so sucess rate. (Especially with me behind the scope).

These hunts have been selling out before they became popular on Jesse's sight. I missed out on two hunts last year because I drug my feet. On the north side there are people that hunt Tejon on a regular basis, either with a big game membership or a small game membership, and still show up for the pig o rama's. It seems like half of Bakersfield is at these things.
I was at the NWTF dinner last week and a ton of people were talking about when the next one would be. That's why you have to get your'e stuff in early. I tried calling Sandy today a few times and never got through, then got busy with actual work ( I hate it when work gets in the way). I'll try again tommorow and post when I can.

Of Tejon's 328,000 square acres over 270,000 of them are huntable.  That's over 400 square miles of ranch (wouldn't that be nice to have?).  While not a biologist, I think that it would be impossible to hunt out that ranch for pigs even if they wanted to.  The F&G guys are going to have a hard enough time with Santa Cruz that's completely contained let alone Tejon.

And, unfortunately for Tejon, they really don't make that much at the end of the day on these hunts.  $300/person times 5 times a year and even with 100 hunters per hunt (more than they have now) is only $150k.  Sounds like a lot when it's in your bank account but probably only covers their costs when you consider the paperwork, the hands running around the ranch to make sure everyone is ok, etc.

I'm not saying that they do this out of the goodness of their hearts but if they had to sustain the ranch off of hunting revenues, the price would be 10x what it is now.

Glad to hear you guys think that there are plenty of pigs for us all.  I asked Tejon about the pig over- population.  They agreed that it is a problem for any cattle ranch.  I asked if they have considered hiring a professional exterminator.  They said that they need the money.  I don't think they are promotiong the PIG O RAMA just for fun.  You're right though. It's probably a drop in the bucket. However, it might cover the payroll for a few weeks. Any hoo, at $300, it's affordable entertainment, and sometimes you get that much back in pork products.  I call that a Win/Win.

If you received a packet for the last Pi-O-Rama but didn't make it.  Will you automatically receive one for this one?

UPDATE, just got off the phone with Sandy. This has grown so big in the last few hunts that it is now being turned over to a new person, Barbra. Her new number is (661)663-4288. Sandy didn't know if the number is working yet or not, but should be by tommorow (03/13/02)

If you have applied before, you should be recieving a packet in the mail shortly. If not, you need to contact the new number and request a packet.
If for some reason you don't get through and get a packet by next week, IM me with a fax number and I can fax you over the information you need. Please wait until at least Monday or Tuesday of next week, that should give me time to get my stuff in the mail.

You guys need to deciede which area you wish to hunt, and get things sent as soon as you recieve it.

Alas, I won't be making this hunt afterall. Family wedding (yuk), gotta keep peace within the ranks.

Well, I'd like to suggest the south area.  But that's just because of the problem DFG Warden someone says likes to hang around the north end.  Since I've never hunted the ranch I'm open to suggestions.  I just want to get our reservations in as soon as possible.

I emailed Don Geivet about getting an application sent out and have had no response. Has anyone else contacted him recently about getting reservations?

OK well it looks like I just received an email from Tejon Ranch. Here's what it said:

"Hi Jesse:
Thank you for you inquiry to Don Geivet re our April Pig Hunt.
The mailing for this and 2 other Pig-O-Ramas is in preparation as
I type. I expect to mail by Friday latest. If this mailing leaves any
unanswered questions feel free to email me. bbb@frazmtn.com.
Being new on staff, assisting Don Geivet with the Pig-O-Ramas, I
am waiting for telephone hook up, in the mean time feel free to email
me. Thank you.
Barbara Boeck, Tejon Ranch"

I'll let you all know what the packet says on this. I'll also try to find out which sections are full.

Yotegetter,

There are no reservations. It's on a first come first serve basis. The packet you will recieve will contain a regestration packet. From this packet you have to choose which area you wish to hunt. That is why everybody who is going is going to have to get together and figure out which area to put into for as quick as possible. There will be no area's full yet, but they will fast. Those that have hunted before already have there packets ready to be mailed per Sandy as of yesterday, those who have'nt won't get their's until they call for one.

How's the south side sound since there's that DFG guy on the other side.

Any votes for the south side if available? Also how many are going for sure?

Guys....don't let the DFG guy influence your'e decision on where to hunt. He covers the ENTIRE ranch. Over the weekend he'll cover all of the areas that are being hunted. Just mind your'e p's and q's and you'll be fine. Besides if you let him influence the decision then he gets the upper hand. To the dogs with him!!!

hronk,

the differance in miles is minimal. Everbody has to go check in at the main headquarters on top of the Grapevine (actually it's in Lebuc) no earlier than 8:00a.m. on Friday. It's here that you get your'e pig tag back, the one you send in with your'e application and your'e tresspass permits, and a crude map of where your'e going. You disperse from there to your'e hunting areas. The south side is maybe another 15 minute drive. One Track can verify that better than me, but that's in the ballpark.

Wish I were going on this one...

I've never hunted Tejon before but I intend to sign up for the April 12-14 pig hunt.  Are topo maps a good idea and where can I get 'em to cover the areas of Tejon where we are allowed to hunt?
