OK. Unless I hear otherwise, I'm going to assume that if I don't bring it -- I won't have it -- including water.  And assume that I leave the place as clean or cleaner than I found it [i.e., bring in my own trash bags].  Thanks for the help with the directions, by the way.

I don't think there is any kind of water supply at the (south) camping area. Bring a few  gallons to drink, and a few to wash up with after you kill that big 'ol hog.  You could always fill your jugs at the gate if you're running low. The town of Lebec is only a few miles from the gate and about 8 miles from camp.

It's primitive camping. Bring water. You'll find the headquarters and the gate to the property just fine. There will be other hunters around to help guide you in the right direction. Be warned though at night I snore like a bear.

Jrifnbark:

I don't know the official success rate.  However, in my camp it has been 100% on two trips.  I think it's an easy 85%.  (No offense Kernhunter.)  If you hunt you will see pigs.  Find fresh sign, and stay down wind.

One Track,

None taken. Hope you all (JHPer's) have 100% success rate, but most of all I hope you all have a great time. When all is said and done there is more to hunting than taking game. At least it is for me, more so as I get older. On the other hand it sure is hard to beat some good bar-b-q'd backstrap :eat-burger:.

Have fun and hunt safe.....

Well 9 guys showed up, the 4 rifenbark's, Hook, Bob, Evan III, Jesse, and myself.  Rookie (rifenbark) got one friday evening. We'll let him tell that story.  We were going to send out a search party for the Rifenbark's but they finally made it back to camp around 11pm.  Nobody got anything saturday, but Hook got one sunday morning.  Total take for us was 2.  The total for the weekend was 61 hunters and 24 pigs.  Hunting was hard, and the ranch is huge.  Looks like you just have to spend enough time there to learn some good spots.  Every area has lots of rooting, and most of the canyons and draws have water now.  Over the weekend we probably saw 70-80 deer.  The ranch is just beatiful and full of wildlife.  Saw golden eagles, elk, dove, quail, deer, bobcat.  Heard coyotes and turkey.  I look forward to going up there again.  And, of course everyone had some great times around the campfire.  Jesse has a few pictures to post, and the Rifenbarks (great guys) have some more to share.

Hmmmm..... Not as good as I thought it would be.  Did you see pigs but couldn't get close or did the heat keep them in hiding?

I talked to my hunting buddy that DID get to go ont this trip. He was in the north. Only 37 hunters signed up, which is suprising. They killed 20 some hogs, not bad. His group killed the money getter, a 247 lb boar.

He said they saw around 80 hogs in the 2.5 days, 80 plus deer, elk, turkey, and a bear. His party had 3 hunters and all tagged out.

Acording to him the weather was pleasant, although they only had to drag one of the three hogs any distance. He said the hogs are getting pretty weary, since they have had quite a number of hunts lately. With one in each of the next two months, this may be something to consider. Couple that with the heat we will be getting, could be some tough hunting.

He said the Dessert side had only a handfull of hunters, and didn't know how they did.

Glad you guys had fun. But, what up?  How many pigs did you guys see?  Was it foggy?  Was it too hot?

I took a pig on Friday.  I downed it at the bottom of the most inacessible canyon in the area.  I used a Marlin 336W in 30-30 Win. loaded with 170 grain Nosler Partitions.  It took only one step after being hit before going down.  Dan Geivet had to send a ranch employee (Cody) to help us get the animal out of the canyon.  The pig weighed about 150 lbs.

Well, I made back from Tejon, it is an awesome place. Lots of wildlife like everyone said.
Eagles, Elk, Deer, Coyote, Hogs, and steep a$$ hills.

It was real nice to meet all the Rifenbark's, you're a great group of guys. We all had fun sharing stories around the camp fire, Jesse always seems to make us laugh with his tall tails. :toast-yellow:

I was one of the unlucky ones that killed a hog....That's right, unlucky, because it rolled into a hell  hole 3 miles deep. My buddy Bill, AKA "guest" on Jesses, spotted this group of 8-10 pigs moving up the face of the canyon across from us. I ranged them at 315 yards and moving closer. Once they got directly across the canyon from us they were 200 yards. I took aim and sent a 165 grain BTSP out of my '06. After recovering from the recoil I say this hog rolling down the canyon and disapear into an abyss. :skeered::skeered:

Getting to the bottom of the canyon nearly killed me. Sliding on my behind all the way down. I managed to move up about 100 feet up the bottom of the canyon to look for my hog. I took a short break to recover from exhaustion then noticed the hog laying against a log.  As I rolled it over and it started rolling the rest of the way down the canyon, I jumped out of the way just in time as not go along with it into the abyss.

Bill and I finally made it to the bottom and were considering calling in a rescue helicopter to pick us, one of us could play hurt and they would pick us and the hog up while they were here for us, right? Nah, not a good idea. It was too steep to go up the canyon so we decided to got a long pole and tied the hog to it and carry it up the bottom of the canyon on our sholders. It worked great.

I had'nt worked so hard since my days in the military doing 12 mile marches with a 65 lb. ruck on my back.  We finally made it to were we could bring the truck down and load the hog on it. Remind me NEVER shoot and a hog across a deep canyon again.

It was a great trip and all the hard work payed off with a nice meat pig.

Thanks to Bill AKA "guest" for spoting the hogs, calling me over, letting me get the first shot off and helping me pack it out.

It turned out to be a 90 lb young boar, here are some pictures... Tejon Pig-o-rama

Well, the picture of Hook, Bill, and the hog is the ONLY thing I shot all weekend. It was a great weekend anyway. There was alot of game on the ranch as the others said. I'm not to sure what went wrong, but we all had fun.  It wasn't to hot in the mourning and evenings. The days did get to around 80. As for the desert, I think there was something like 14 hunters, and from what barbra said they were hunting on the south side. I guess because of the low enrollment in the desert section they moved the hunters to the south side.
Nvsolitude what happened? Did you make it. What about you Paulc and friend.

Hey Guys! I did make it. I camped right near the entrance to the campground. I didn't see one JHP sticker, but then I always got into camp really late. In fact I started hunting about 3 on Friday afternoon and didn't pitch my tent until after I was through hunting. I was the white chevy PU with the blue plates. Saw pigs and had shot opportunities everyday but was waiting until I saw some tusks! Had three small boars with sows,  from 50 to 100 yards away from me on friday afternoon. The biggest pigs I saw were 4 huge sows traveling together with about 15 piglets and several young pigs with them. What hogs! I took a large boar at 7:30 Sunday morning and had to bone him out to get him out. My 51 year old body felt 51 at the end of that day!  My poor little tent was all by himself when rolled into camp at 5:20 Sunday to pack up for the 8 hour drive home. Sorry I didn't get to meet any of you. I'll post some pictures later, but need to run to work now.
see you later, steve

NV:  Sorry we missed you.  We were in the back of the camp ground with 2 tents and Hook's trailer.  We must have drove past you every time we came and went.  We kept checking the other cars for JHP stickers.
We all had decals on the vehicles, and we even posted a green JHP sign by the fire ring. Was that you on the cement by the hanging area?  Well, anyway sounds like had a good time and got a nice pig.  Hope we can get together again.
