I wanted a new topic for this one, because the other was getting kinda long. It's also a little early to post in the Events section but I thought you'd all like to know...
We have been approved by the Tejon Ranch to hold the first annual JHP Pig O Rama (or Ham Slam, or Oinker Doinker, or whatever you wanna call it) on the weekend of May 21-23, 2004. Yupp make note... that's 2004. A little over a year and a month. That means that, if you start saving a dollar a day now, you'll have enough put aside for this hunt.
Hopefully, by the end of May, the rains should be over for the year but it won't be too dry and hot yet. Of course, ya'll know as well as I do what the seasons are like in this state. Could be flood or could be drought... anything can happen in CA Springtime.
The hunt will be modeled similarly to the Pig O Rama, although there will be some minor differences. I'm awaiting an information packet that spells out what those differences are, and will share the info with you all when it comes.
The hunt will cost $300 per hunter, plus the $10 insurance fee. Remember that the insurance is good for a year, from September through August. If you have already paid the insurance for another Tejon hunt in that time period, you won't have to pay it again.
I have reserved the South side for this hunt, since most of us are familiar with it. I told the ranch to expect between 20 and 40 hunters. That should be well within the capacity of the area. We can camp (primitive camping or self-contained campers/RVs) on the site, or you can make arrangements at any of the local hotels. We will NOT have access to the Tejon lodge.
This is an "any legal methods" hunt. From my two visits to Tejon, I recommend a rifle, at least as backup. Archery hunting can certainly be productive, but you may want to "stack the deck" in case the weekend is drawing to a close and you haven't been able to get that 25 yard shot.
No varmints or other game may be taken. This is pigs only. There will be a one pig per hunter limit.
There is no ranch-sponsored prize for biggest pig. We can certainly organize our own pool and prizes, though. That can all be determined between now and then.
I will be receiving the application packets from the ranch later, as the date draws nearer. I'll let everyone know when they are ready, and you will be able to request them directly through me. Please use me as the contact for this hunt, instead of contacting the Ranch directly. The email link below my profile works just fine, or you may PM me.
I'll keep you all posted, of course, as any more information comes in. I'm pretty excited that we'll be getting this great opportunity. I look forward to seeing it come to fruition.
