Well just wanna share my long time hunting partner and cousin Jim's 6x6 eastern OR bull. He shot it yesterday at 17:30 in Ukiah. This is just a cell phone pic so it might no turn out that great but congrats to him.

He's still trying to get the newbies into some elk as well so good luck to them.

Cousin Jim came back last nite and left the newbies in the woods. I went over to celebrate with him as this was the first year that I missed an elk hunt with him. I'm very proud of him since everything went well this season. I even got to share a nice tender steak with him.

I decided to take a couple pics with him since he left his camera with the newbies of the pics he took in the field.

Hey hunterdoug,

They're bugling their heads off right now so you'll be in some good hunting bro. I was heading out this Sat with an 18 yrd old newbie but his uncle in Fresno had a stroke and is in a pretty bad shape so he's coming down there instead. But anyhow, good luck to ya comin Mon(ster)day.

ORElkbow sorry to hear about the uncles stroke hope things turn better for him, not that it matters just curious is that a rosie or a rockie how far east are the rosie geens, bugling oh music to my ears, my buddies set camp on thurs haven't heard a word, just waking to elk dreams every night.

That was a rocky. Rosies are usually to the west of the crest of the cascades. Some will venture onto the east part of the cascades during the winter storms but mostly they stay within the I-5 corridor, if you will.

I just got back from trying to bag a blacktail in the coastal mts but there was just too many people out there today. I didn't hear any bugles today except for the terminator all throughout the canyons. Didn't see any elk nor deer today. We had good rain this morning so maybe tomorrow should be a good day to hunt. Hey good luck to ya, you only have two more days until you come back up right?

orelkbow,
Just got back from 8 days looking for bulls up in the Beaulah zone. Hiked all over the mountains, maybe 60 miles total up and down at 7000 feet, saw one cow and one bull, only heard two elk bugles, but the temps were 77-83 degrees and only a little drizzle on Monday. Too hot for the rut or bugling. We checked all my fav secret spots(which are not secret any more), deep canyons with dark timber, and springs at least a mile from any road. Saw lots of 2-3 week old sign, but even the other hunters we ran into didn't have any confirmed sightings of fresh sign.
We had some rumors of 150 elk grouped up on a neighboring ranch, feeding only at night in the alfalfa fields, and they have a guiding operation and another report of 40-60 doing the same on another ranch 40 miles away. Makes me wonder if they got chased off the mountain and down onto the private ranches over the opener? Lots of hunters opening week with atvs.
Not even any reports of success or photos at the local market/gas station with the big or bull buck contest going on. The gal at the market said it is slow to none and bad for business.
Oh, well tag soup for me this year...

Easymoney,

Well good to hear you came out but man sorry to hear about no elk. You are right though about lots of people. This year has been crazy with new archers and all. I've talked to soooo many archers out in the field that had just started bowhunting this year and I mean lots.

All our honey holes have been run down as well. I guess that's just how it is sometimes huh. Not many success stories like you said that's why someone stold my cousin's block when they stopped by camp to see his bull. I guess from frustration or somn.

Maybe next year if you decide to come back, you can make a trip with us.

orelkbow,
Yeah, the hot weather and the numbers of people...
Thanks for the offer, I'm already thinking about my options for next season...
