Just curious who & how many applied, and for which weekends.

BDB and myself applied for the weekend of April 16-17.

Sierra Explorer applied (I think) but I don't know the date he chose.

Anybody know how many people usually apply for these hunts?

p.s. If this is the first you're hearing about it you're out of luck because the drawing was last week. Contact DFG in early 2006 for instructions on how to apply next year.

I doubt you would be interested... I don't have much emotional investment in this draw because it's shotgun with slugs only... no fun with bows and arrows. The good thing though is it's free to apply, all you need if you draw is a regular pig tag, and it's only 1 hour from home.

I'm just hoping to put some sausage in the freezer and cut another notch in my homeland defense weapon's stock. I've blasted a couple does on depredation tags from near point blank range and man, them 1oz. slug get that deer's attention QUICK... Mossy 590, Sidearmor sight rail, Aimpoint red-dot sight, speedfeed stock, 8 shot magazine, side saddle, heat shield, bayonet, etc... damn thing is HEAVY, but out to 75 yards it will group slugs at 3" off sandbags. I'll have to jury rig up some kind of extra long plug to drop the magazine capacity to two (and ditch the unecessary side-saddle and bayonet), but that's a trivial fix for some prime Lousiana Hot Links!

Anyways, Joice Island is in the Delta right next to Grizzly Island... upper Suisun Bay bay region, upstream from San Francisco Bay and downstream from Sacradementia.

I applied. I put in my friend and myself, separately, the first year they had this hunt. He got drawn and my app got sent back to me!

I went along as his dog/gun bearer/grunt. Had a great time and should have brought meat home. What ended up happening will be one of those hunts that you rib each other the rest of your lives over. The short version is that we hiked the entire stinking island and then right at the end of the day and while hiking back to the truck we see about half a dozen pigs UNDER his truck. One was even rubbing it's back on his rear tire! It was pretty frustrating watching over his shoulder while he missed a broadside and 20 yard shot! It was his first time shooting shotgun and slugs but still. I'll always harass him over that alone!

Kentuck, I found that story of your hunt in the archives... pretty funny and I can see why you'll never forget it!

Funny part was that my friend went from threatening my life for the keys to his truck before he soiled his shorts to not having to go for about another 3-4 hours.

I'll never forget looking across that field at a pig scratching it's back on his rear tire.

I have put in for a few years with no luck. I have seen several pigs out there during duck hunts, and some big ones. It looked like they were feeding on tule roots. I don't think this hunt is for the young or old. Joice is one rude walk if you get off the perimeter road. Chest waders are a must. No dry land anywhere, and the water and mud out there is pretty stinky. Might not want to gut the animal out there. Dragging out a big boar would be somewhere between "Oh Ma gawd" and Bataan Death March. All in all, the makings of an awesome hunt.

My work partners Cousin from Benica got drawn for last weekend. He did not get anything on Saturday. I was to wiped out (tired) on Sunday for Monday and Monday for Tuesday night to remember to ask for an update.

I Will ask him on Friday.

I have heard of some people not drawn hunting the surrounding tulie patches at extream high tides. It seems like a very gray area if not black to me.

Anyone know if it is "legal" to hunt off of Joice in the surrounding patches via a boat? I would not ever take that gamble- but the reasoning from them why it is legal is that it is an open waterway. Example- Duck hunting.

Pig is open year round- Sort of makes you go Hmmmmmm.

It is pretty hard to find info about it on their website. Best bet is to call them in January next year and ask for the dates and application forms.

Hello guys, I am fairly new to this site, I had to reply, I got drawn for the May 7&8. I have been there 2x before. My son got drawn for the first junior hunt and missed 2 pigs, 1 was huge {400lbs}. The other time as a non hunter and only saw pigs, very bad weather. This hunt is a lot of walking with waders and deep in places. There are perimeter roads but I found the pigs on the islands in middle. Saw some driving through. Talked to a resident and they hunt them regurlarly. They are very spooky.

This from my partner on his cousin -

Saturday- He struck out on chasing a "Big" (300lb?) on on Saturday from 200 yards out and only got to 100 yards before he was made- And did not shoot a small one that was in the water because he did not wish to drag it out.

Sunday- to BEAT to get out of bed and go out again.

He said they are VERY spookie and know the slightest bit of pressure.

Good Luck to you all that got drawn this year.
