Buckhunter,

Been there done that. Email me and I will give you some info. It's not as good as it used to be because the neighboring Open Space ranch has a few folks out eradicating the hogs on a regular basis. But, that probably pushes what hogs that are there onto Joice. My last trip I killed one and saw one. Probably would have had two pigs if I didn't have a little "incident" while gutting my pig early on Sat.

Good for you Tom. I put in for that weekend. From what the DFG guy told me a couple of years ago things should line up good for that weekend.

I got the 10th and 11th of March out of 660 apps. Do that many people actually apply? Anyway, I should have a scouting report if you're interested. I used to hunt pigs a lot on the coast. Never tried to bust them out of the tules. Should be interesting.

I was out at Grizzly Island duck hunting and pheasant hunting, not sure how Joice Island is but might be a good idea to wear waterproof socks or boots. It's a marshy area.

Pigs on Joyce Island? I had no idea. Next thing you'll tell me is that they have Elk on Grizzly Island.

I guess I should check my mailbox too. I don't have a shotgun with a riffled barrel so I was wondering if 00 Buck is ok or can someone recommend a slug that will work on a smooth barrel? Thanks

ksberry209,

I'm not sure if buckshot is legal but rifled slugs out of your smooth bore will be fine. I've been on this hunt twice. Once with a friend and once as the hunter. You can take one non-hunting partner. None of the shots taken were over 30 yards. One word of advice, take your shotgun out and shoot it first. A box of slugs are cheap and you'll appreciate doing it.

I realized that I also applied for the easter weekend with a two hunter party - buckhunter got that spot already. So, no hope for late mail from DFG!

I have a rifled slug barrel for my 870 remington. It's a 2.75/3" 12 gauge barrel. If anyone wants to borrow it, you are welcome to do so. I am in the east bay. Write me an email.

I put my son in for the first weekend reserved for juniors only. Since I havn't gotten anything in the mail I can only assume he did not get drawn.
<
A question I had is the press release says you can use dogs and all Jr's need an adult chaperone. Does the chaperone and dog handler have to be the same person? I guess the answer really doesn't matter anymore, at least for me. I could take an educated guess though and say the answer is yes. Anybody have info or thoughts on this?

KSBerry,

If you end up going smooth bore, I really like those Brenneke "rottweiler" rifled slugs in 3" mag.

Another great slug is a Remington H.P. copper solid sabot in 3" mag. There has been questions about weather or not you should shoot them from a smooth bore. Me personally I have shot deer with them from a smooth bore. I like them and put in a call to an expert for more on the topic. I will let you know when I hear back. I like them.

The Brenneke's are bad ass and a quarantee great shell if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks on them.

KSBerry,

This info is from outdoor life Nov. 2005.

It has an article about shotgun slugs. It says that you can get the same accuracy from a rifled slug barrel with sabot slugs at 100 yds. as you can with a smooth bore barrel with standard rifled slugs at 50 yds. Sounds a bit exagerated to me but that's what it says.

tests were all in 2 3/4" shells and keep in mind all guns shoot different.

Smooth bore- rifled slugs

#1 Federal Premium Vital Shock. Most accurate. 3/4 oz. 1600 fps.

#2 Winchester Power Point. Not as accurate. 1700 fps.

Worst tested was Remington Buckhammer

Rifled barrel- Sabot slugs

#1 Remington Premier Core Lokt Ultra. Extremely accurate. 7/8 oz.(385 gr.) 1900 fps.

#2 Federal Premium Vital shock barnes expander H.P. slug. 3/4 oz.(325 gr.) 1900 fps.

Hope the info is some help and good luck on your hunt.

My brother-in-law got pulled for March 17-18. Same weekend as Tom Petterson. I would be interested in hearing AimHigh's opening adult weekend report. I will only be able to go with my brother-in-law one of the two days. Is there anyone out there with dogs that would be interested in going with him one of the two days?
