I am new to the junior hunt stuff. My daughter is 11. I have plans for her next year, but just here in California.

Any recommendations on junior hunts out of state and prices? Or where to go and search. I myself have only hunted California but my dad has done several out of state.

Also, any advice on junior hunts here in California would be appreciated as well. She wants a nice buck and elk. Thanks for the help!

I know that the San Jacinto wildlife refuge has a few younth hunts each year in conjunction with upland game organization. They also have an end season young waterfowl hunt, about two weeks after the regular season closes

Talk to Tom Trakes at the San Jacinto Wildlife area, he's the man to talk to.

AZ has some good options that I've been looking into for our family. Spring bear in OR is really affordable as well. As for the in CA hunts, be sure to start her off right away building deer points. Now that they lowered the youth age in CA to 16, two of my sons have gotten decent draws with only 2 points.

Arizona has great youth opportunities and they are dirt cheap. In Arizona, kids can apply for a big game tag starting at age 10 and when we did it, the application was only $15. My son drew a youth cow tag for unit 22 on the first try and the tag was only $65. Also, if you live in So Cal, some of the Az hunts are just as close or closer than the central or northern California hunts

I hunt in AZ occasionally and it's always been a good experience. Thing that sticks out when hunting waterfowl there is the friendliness of their game wardens. They approach their job with the attitude that the hunter is innocent until proven guilty, not like California. This is an example of what I'm talking about, they will ask you "are you shooting steel today" in California out comes the magnet and they start checking your shells no matter what you said. If you are hunting out of your boat, the question might be how many birds did you get. Your answer is good enough, not who shot this bird or that and start then looking through everything look for an infraction. After every encounter with them I left feeling we were playing on the same team. Different mind set!

Look at the secondary draw for Colorado youth applicants get preference over adults, there are some really great tags that get returned if you do your research when the list comes out.. i Don’t agree with how the secondary draw is ran but I will take advantage of it to get my daughter some great tags when she turns 12.

Always bring your citizens complaint form 980 and have it ready when dealing with the California fish and game .
