I wanted to let everyone know that the new Junior elk hunts for California are just proposed at this time. It is up to the Fish and Game Commission to decide which jr elk hunts will be implemented. They will decide in May at the Commission meeting. My name is Joe Hobbs and I am the elk and antelope coordinator for the Department of Fish and Game. If you have any questions please give me a call at 916 445-9992.

Welcome to JHO Joe! As far as I know there's only one other guy that posts here that is involved in California game management... that would be "Ranger Joel"... he manages the Lake Sonoma Army Corp. of Engineers archery-only pig hunting... he's been a great asset and we hope you check in with us occassionally to provide updates and/or enter discussions with us.

That said, if you have the time, there's a recent thread where we have been discussing the allocation of elk tags for junior, any weapon, and archery only hunts. Some of us presented our opinions and we would really value an interpretation on the subject from someone such as yourself as this seems right up your alley.

This is the thread on elk tags...

Thanks, and welcome again!

I read most of the other thread and I can see everyone has a different opinion. I want to clarify one thing about Grizzly Island. There are only two bull auction tags for Grizzly Island and as far as I know that is all there has ever been. In Fish and Game Code The Department can auction off three elk tags, two for Grizzly Island and one in Owens Valley. The revenue they have brought to the Department has varied from around 25,000 to 42,000 (for Grizzly Island).
Tag allocation is a touchy subject and we have a demand success ratio we look at. Some of the archery elk hunts have success rates equal to rifle. Since this is a holiday for me I am going to spend the rest of the day with the family. Have a good one.

Welcome Joe~! Thanks for the info. Hopefully, the commission will approve the Jr hunts.

Auction tags are a completely different subject and definately a touchy one with some folks. Maybe a lottery might be a favorable way to go with the general public plus good PR for DFG...maybe a win-win type of a thing. But, I have no idea if a lottery option would generate as much revenue or benefit for wildlife as the auction tags. I'm sure some working for the wildlife benefactors like RMEF, FNAWS, and CDA see the auction tags as more of an entitlement than a privilege...so, an auction tag proposal could generate some fuss there. But, I did notice where the Buffalo, WY chapter of FNAWS is auctioning off chances at a Governer tag in Wyo--$100/ticket with a 300 ticket limit. Will be interesting to see if they generate more revenue that way....may be a new trend in the wildlife orgs.

Have a good holiday.

There's actually a few of us that lurk around these forums... I work up in Northern California for DFG, mapping wildlife, habitat, etc...
