A Monterey County jury has awarded $8.6 million to a motorcyclist who was severely injured when he struck six wild boars on a state highway.

<!--/articlebox -->The jury ruled Friday that the state was responsible for Adam Rogers' injuries, because it knew about the ongoing problem with pigs crossing Highway 1, but did nothing to address it.

Sooooooooo, when I go to the mountains and a deer hits me I can sue the state for not controlling the deer population? It sucks that the guy is confined to a wheel chair, but he was riding while intoxicated :-/.

When I saw that pig crossing sign go up, I knew that they would get sued and lose. Dumb ass ruling typical of this state as it has become. Attorneys and jury trials are changing this world for the worse

It's the entitlement attitude; nothing more.

The Idea that government and its entities should be resposible for protecting us from all harm is so prevelent in todays notion of fairness that it promotes entitlement . sh-t happens and people get hurt, thats just the way it is. drugs/drink, stupidity and or bad luck cause accidents, not critters crossing roads.

I wander how the story would have gone if he ended up in the ditch, with the pigs eating his carcass. Now I don't wish for anyone to end up in a wheel chair, but he might have been better off. I'm just saying.

I have friends who know the man who crashed. While I can feel sympathy for his situation I cannot agree with the decision to have the state pay for his ordeal. While the blame was layed on the states lap I personally believe it was all because of a Home development constructed on the old rancho san carlos ranch in carmel valley that brought the hogs down by the highway. It was home to the origional pack of wild hogs in california. They systematically pushed or killed the hogs out of that enormous ranch into the rancho canada golf course and the carmel river mouth area. I dont believe that rancho san carlos was liable either. I depredated on the golf course for two years and watched huge herds of hogs move through that area as that construction began. The hogs eventually bypassed the golf course due to the hunting pressure and moved further down tward the highway. Rancho san carlos didnt have much hunting on their property back before the development and the hog population was enormous. Huge herds of hogs in the hundreds with many hogs well over 350lbs. When the construction started they decided to turn it into a preserve. The Preserve (thats what the property is currently named) killed hogs by the truckload before and during construction. During that time the hogs arrived down by the highway/golfcourse/carmel rivermouth. There was an accident waiting to happen. I would go down by the highway after dark and watch 40+ hogs cross the highway. You could go to the river mouth in mid day and watch 2 to 3 different herds rooting arround by the river mouth (between the highway and the beach). There really isnt anyone to blame for the situation that happened nor is any organization responcible but I think that the construction at the old rancho san carlos ranch set forth the migration of the pressured hogs into new unwelcomed areas.

Thats what you get when attorneys are allowed to put the dumbest of the dumb on the jury. The jury found the state responsible. Shat happens! Thats the way life is. No ones fault.

Yet another example of urban sprawl. They should have turned that preserve into another Lake Sonoma, take a number and start harvesting. When will they learn?
