Roach's Sporting Goods in CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS![/b]

Well, I gues that explains why I didn't recognize it .
I think the shelves at the Trader's are three or so guns deep. It's been a while since I've been there. Their prices are high, a lot of the sales people think they're celebrities and I find the "feeding frenzy" at the counters on weekends downright scary. BUT, their sales specials are pretty good sometimes.

Bwana, I agree.

There are a lot of things I hate about going to Traders, but it is just about the only show in town with the variety of stuff. I also kinda like the thought that their staying in business is a stick in the eye to the anti-gun government of Alameda County and Oakland.

anyone checked out Andreotti Firearms or Castro Valley Gun Shop? They're both in Castro Valley. They're both small, put pack alot into them. I actually transferd the 700 through Andreotti because his transfer fee was only $75. Traders wanted something like $150. And yes, seeing some of the people looking at guns, especially handguns at Traders is a bit scary. Canyon Sports in Martinez is huge, maybe carrying more than Traders, but they have the "my sh*t don't stink" attitude too. Sorry if I offended anyone......

I thought Reed's in San Jose had the lock on that.

they still do in my book.

Email me if anyone in the Bay Area are looking for a reasonable transfer cost for your firearm. $55 for cost of transfer and DROS fee. These are great folks.

I give a big thumbs up to Castro Valley Gun Shop. They're just what I expect from a gunshop... tons of guns, core equipment, and nothing else.

It's a shame they decided not to mess with the gunsmithing anymore, although John has helped me out a time or two... usually only for the cost of parts.

They also help out the CWA a lot... at least the local chapter.

I have the same rifle in a 22-250. Love the gun. I'm still waiting to get my first coyote with it. I paid $500 (used) for it. It probaably dates to the late 70's. The wood was much nicer then, as is the case with most rifles and shotguns now.

Blackknight...

Actually, the transfer fee is pretty common in many states that manage the private transfer of firearms... although the states I'm most familiar with only use it for handguns.

It's supposed to offset the FFL (federal firearms license) holder's costs for handling your sale. Basically, the transfer has to take place through a licensed agent. Since that agent didn't make any money off the sale, he now has an avenue to make money off the transfer. It's sort of fair, as long as they don't try to rip you off (there's supposed to be a legal limit) on the transfer fee.

It should run about $45-$55, based on last time I did one.

Maxstar, that's a nice rifle... I have a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle with the detachable magazine on it. I hate it so much(It shoots great but), I have to replace the magazine every year because the springs wears out. On second season I had it, I took it on an A zone trip and saw a nice forkie and I shot at it and hit it but the buck was still running strong. I ran to cut it off to see if I could get another shot and as I had him in the crosshairs. Click! The magazine dropped out about 30 yards away where I had taken the first shot. I was a little disappointed but found the blood trail and found him 150 yards away. Check those springs if it's configured like the Mountain Rifle....

Blackknight, in CA if you buy any gun through private transfer or out of state, it must go through a licensed FFL before it goes into your hands. So, if you order online, add the DROS cost into your total cost, before you decide if it's a good deal or not.

While you can definitely get some good deals shopping online, by the time you factor in DROS and shipping costs, it may not be as sweet a deal as you'd expected.

Hey Fish - Thanks for the heads up regarding the mag. Good thing the replacements are cheap.

Blackknights - Here's how I bought the rifle:

I saw it for sale on gunsamerica.com. I called Roach's (the seller) and they said the rifle was still availible. I hooked up Joe @ Roach's with Dave @ Andreotti and the two guys chatted and exchanged their FFL's. I then sent a money order to Roach's for the cost of the gun plus shipping. Once they recieved the payment, they sent the rifle to Andreotti. Dave called me when the rifle arrived and I went there and filled out the paperwork and paid him the transfer fee and DROS fee which together were 100 bucks. I waited the 10 days and I got myself a rifle!

Seems kinda tedious, which it can be, but it's worth it. The only drawback is not being able to look at/ inspect the gun before purchase. You just have to ask and trust the seller. Luckily the 700 is at about 98% - just a few dings on the stock. I'm very happy with it.

You're going to pay the DROS fee regardless. If you are making an interstate purchase on line you are not going to pay sales tax. In most cases that cancels out the transfer fee. You just have to hunt for a good enough deal to make up for the shipping.
On the other hand sometimes you find a gun that you've been searching for for 25,000,000 years or longer.
