Finally I made the commitment. After doing some research and considering how much I wanted to spend, I went with the Olympus C740. I know Foulshot has one and he's posted some nice pictures.

I got the Oly 128MB XD-Picture card and the Oly B-70 rechargable batteries and charger.

I'm pretty much a rookie photographer so I'm sure I will have some questions for you all once I get it. I also recently purchased a Dell 4600 so that will be the computer I use for downloading my photos.

Are there any other accessories you all might strongly suggest? I'll mostly be taking pictures of my kids and hopefully a lot of pictures while hunting.

Hey Matt, congrats!

I know one thing that I bought is the 1.7x teleconverter. Thats for the long out shots, not so much for action. I am currently looking into filters, if thats possible.

Have fun with the camera!

P.S. missed you the other night at Sushi, we'll hook up next time!

I recently bought my first digital camera too, a Minolta DiMage XT. I was in Wally world the other day and was browsing the cameras, when the lady at the counter showed me the minolta, it was on clearance from 300 bucks to 100 bucks. I bought it, and am very happy with it.

Matt,

Look into getting a lens adapter tube (CL-40 I think) and filter(s). Aside from enhancing the pics you take, the filters will protect your camera lens from scratches. I've got the 750 and love it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I bought the camera on the internet but do you suggest getting the filter's & photo enhancement programs from a local store or from the internet too?

Zach, I couldn't get away from a family dinner since my sister was in from out of town. Hopefully next time. Tried to motivate and meet you guys for breakfast in Ramona last Sat too but too many unattended things around the house got in my head and kept me from going. Hope you guys had a good time. Did you spot any turkeys?

Word of caution on the digital camera...If you have a case with velcro flap on it
ALWAYS use the snap locking closure. While crossing a creek chasing a herd of elk my 740 slipped out of the case and into three feet of water. Velcro didn't catch.

My fault because it was quicker to get at camera if I left it loose in the case.

Should get it back in a week, cost $191 for total rebuild and 6 months warranty.

Adobe Photo Elements is a must have.

congrats on the new cam. post up some pics when you get a chance. Be careful though, the learning curve on a digital is pretty quick, it can become addicting.. I started photography as a hobby.. It has avalanched into a passion now..

Where did you buy your C740 ? I am looking at the C-750 Ultra zoom, and have found it online for about $400.00

How quick can you take shots, or in better words, what is the wait time you have, to take follow up shots ?

Also, how quick is the shutter ? My current camera, when I take a picture, sometimes the subject of the photo is gone by the time the shutter closes.

thanks

gtk,

I just got it yesterday and haven't had time to open the box yet. Others here can address your technical questions since I am a complete rookie to digital cameras. I did do some research, however, on where to purchase my camera. Camera, 128mb Oly XD-Picture Card, Oly rechargable batteries & charger, shipping & sales tax totaled $406.52 from NewEgg.com.

I saw other online sights with cheaper camera prices but after checking reviews, many of them were pretty sketchy to do business with. Also, some of the places with good prices on the cameras have high prices for the accessories and shipping. This company was great. Ordered it on Monday, emailed ordered confirmation, shipped on Tue with emailed confirmation & tracking #, received yesterday (1 week from order date) but would have rec'd it on Wed or Thur last week but I called FedEx to hold until yesterday since I would be out of town.

wildebeast, your warning is well taken. I be looking for a good case that is secure.

lan-lord, that's what I'm afraid of! Oh well, I can think of worse addictions.
