rb..you will need to tune and shoot it a bit before heading out. arrows? have you selected arrows? kinda a black magic, voodoo element to arrow selection..i had some guy use software to help me pick a shaft and length..and i bet i could still go stiffer..(more spine)..

then comes broadheads. oh lordie. getting broadheads to hit with my fieldpoints was a lesson in life for me.

this bow coming to you used? fully set up? your peep sight will at least need to be moved up and down for your anchor point. this is going to BE FUN! welcome to the club.

Don't worry, you'll be ready to hunt soon enough. A few thousand arrows and you should be good to go.

I agree

These guys are right on - get your bow properly tuned and shoot a lot before you hit the woods. Get correctly spined arrows, field points and broadheads. Take some time and you'll be ready to get out there before you know it. You don't want to make a bad hit on any animal.

You could pick up some bludgeon or judo tips and start with rabbit or ground squirrel. You are pretty much guaranteed a clean kill if you can hit them, and it will certainly show if you're ready for something bigger.

Hey, I admire your zest and enthusian. Sounds like you're ready to hit the field and jump in with both feet. Please keep one thing in mind for archery; once an arrow is fired, you can't take it back. Before any archer goes out, he needs to stop an ask himself one question; if I were the deer, would I want "myself" shooting at "me" based on the amount of practice and experience I have. Archery isn't something that's learned overnight. Contrary to some peoples beliefs, hunting is learned in the field, accuracy is not. Accuracy is learned through practice at the range or in your backyard. Estimating yardage, windage, angles, and degrees are something that take a long time to master. I've been shooting for years, and I still have touble once I break the 40 yard mark (and I shoot about 3 days a week). Only you know what your own limitations are. I wish you the best of luck.

Once you learn how to become a good archer, you'll inevitably become a great rifle hunter.
Game on! :deer::archer green:

Farmerdoug said it all. You need to practice your shots and shoot at yardages that you would never shoot an animal at. Look at the anatomy of the animal, and make sure of your shot placement. Then practice some more.

Good luck!

I appreciate all the tips and in no way did I mean to come off as cocky if I did I am sorry anyone who knows me or has ever meet me know I am the most humble person and I would never take a shot I was not 100% sure I could make. I am sure archery is like any other sport where it take a huge cominment to master and even like u said after 40 Yrs there is always something else to learn that's why I am so excited about all I need to learn :) thx again i will keep everyone updated on how it's going :)

No worries rb. I don't think anyone saw you as anything but anxious like we all have been before. I must easily fling over 1,000 a week, and I still sometimes doubt my own ability. I'm shooting an unmarked 3D right now that reinforces that I need more work judging distances (thank goodness for rangefinders). Once I know the distance, I'm a lot more comfortable, although I still won't release on anything living over 35-40 yards.

Keep practicing as much as possible, enjoy the new bow, and good luck!

You don't sound cocky to me at all. If anything, you sound pumped. I remember feeling the same way you do when I got my first gun/bow. Hell, I wish I could bottle up some of your enthusiasm and give it to some of my hunting buddies who have gotten lazy over the years. :toast-yellow:

Definitely excited... and that's a good thing!

There's nothing wrong with being excited and eager. Just reading your excitement gets me excited to pick my bow up and practice some more. You certainly didn't come off cocky. I hope you have a great time getting her all tuned in. Once you do get out there, good luck and have fun!

as somebody who is also new to the bow....practice,practice,practice....and when you can hit what you are aiming at 9 outa 10 shots...practice more...cause when you do get a shot in the field...it aint the same....the first shot i had this year was at a turkey at 35yds...all i did was give him a mowhawk....but i do enjoy this side of hunting more than a gun....good luck

you cocky bestage! hahah. so you bought the NEW black ice? the one with FLX feature? i love the single cam bowtechs! that FLX is a great idea, i bet everyone comes up with a version soon.

you live in livermore..let's get togther to do some shootin. you will be ready sooner than you think. the first time i bowhunter here in cali..i shot and shot. thousands of shots. got decent. met up with a stranger..JKVshooter here on the forums. i was such a newb, he had to loan me broadheads!! cant remember if i got retarded and forgot them, but i seem to remember trying to decide on the type of broadhead. he loaned me slicktricks, and i kept with them. i wasnt even smart enough to tune them in. turns out, that bow shot everything.

So I have shot my bow 4 times now and the farthest distance I have had a chance to shoot is 60 yards I can hit about a 6-8in group do u think that's good enough to try and hunt?

if it is with a fieldtip..no

if your shooting 6" groups at 60 with a broadhead..go hunt. that is pretty good. took me months to get it to feel natural.

come to think of it; get back to the range and practice shooting off or your knees..80% of your hunting will be from some contorted, cirque du soliel postion..

nice work!
