kentucky elk hunting

just wondering if anyone knew anything about hunting elk in kentucky. apparently they have non-resident opportunities and about 4000 animals. kentucky is a lot more easily traveled than the western states for a southerner. how does a non-resident go about getting the required licenses and permits? what are some good areas to study? whats the preferred method? anyone with experience wanna help? thanks.

Here is some info.

It’s only $10 to apply for one of the 100 permits! Drawn, licensed hunters who live in Kentucky will only pay another $25 for a permit to hunt. Non-Residents will only pay $300 if drawn. That’s a tremendous deal compared to similar opportunities in other states. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2005.

The herd is up to near 5500 animals, 100 permits this year and up to 10% NR will be drawn.

Probably be near 1,000 permits in a few years as the target herd of 8,000 will be reached very soon.

Bull to cow ratio of near 1:2, and lots of 300+ inch bulls. Half the permits will be bulls, the other half cows.

Good luck! Last year there were near 8800 applicants. Not bad odds for a raffle type drawing.

Some permits will be limited area for bull (first Sat in Oct for a week any legal weapon) limited area cow ( first Sat in Dec for a week any legal weapon) and at large permits will be valid from October through January for whatever weapon is legal for deer at the time.

There is assistance to find places to hunt for the at large permit winners.

Deer hunters outside the 16 county elk zone may harvest an elk if they have purchased the drawing permit. There were around 20 taken outside the zone last year.
