I am kind of new to wild boar hunting. I live in the kern county and i was wondering if there are any public lands around here that have boar. Or around this area without having to pay for a guide.
First of all, welcome to JHP! A great place to hang out and share information, shoot the breeze, and generally waste the time we're supposed to be working! :smile-wink:
I don't know the Kern area real well, but there are a couple of guys here who hail from down there. I bet they've got some suggestions.
One thing I'd recommend (if you haven't already) is to get a copy of the DFG Guide to Hunting Wild Pigs in California. It lays out the available public lands, and provides a brief synopsis of the habitat and likelihood of getting hogs. You can also check out the BLM website. They have similar descriptions of the BLM parcels and their likelihood of holding different types of game.
Don't be discouraged by the negative reports, though. If you went solely by this pamphlet's advice, you wouldn't even bother to hunt public lands. Reading these documents makes it sound like there are no pigs anywhere. That's not quite true, but you do have to work hard to get one on public land (or get REAL lucky).
welcome newbie. I am one of those speckmisser speaks of. I too live in bakersfield. Foe a small fee I am willing to sell you info about places around here lol. Just teasing actually there's not alot of places that hold pigs thats real close. Everyone mostly go's tworards the coast. Take speck's advice get the book & check it out. The closest places are still about 1 1/2 hours away or so. I have been to every place around here (I THINK) they are hot steep ugly & brushy. So I prefer going towards the coast. Hey (feelinducky) Where is pine flat ? Sounds familar but then again this kalifornia. Lots of places start with pine something or sierra. Hey speck I'm heading out pig hunting in the morning. Instead of deer opener. Let Me know when you wanna go I'll take ya. Well after deer season anyways lol. good luck everyone wavesfr
I TOO AM FROM BAKERSFIELD. THE BEST PLACE WHICH IS THE CLOSEST IS OUT IN THE CORRIZO PLAINS. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL PIGS OUT THERE IN THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS. I WOULD HAVE TAKEN ONE SATURDAY MORNING BUT DECIDED I WANTED A DEER MORE. I TALKED TO ANOTHER GUY OUT THERE SAID HE TOOK A SHOT AT A BIG FEMALE BUT MISSED. THERE ARE ALSO PIGS AROUND THE RIVER BOTTOM TOWARDS TAFT. YOU CAN NOT HUNT THERE THOUGH. ONE MORE PLACE IS UP AT CROCKER SPRINGS.
I was at carrizo on saturday. Did'nt see any pigs. Some wallow but thats it. I did see 1 spike & 2 does/ 35 elk that I could have hit with a rock. 4 different groups. All with a bull pushing the cows. Except 1 group had a spike pushing them. Rut time I guess. I only seen like 4 baby's to the whole 35. Oh yeah Went through selby campground. It was packed yes you can guess bye who. Como bla bla bla. As soon as We pulled in. Hey rookie see any deer ? I normally don't see very many out there. So I was a little surprised. I never heard a shot except when We jumped a yote & emptied at it.

YOU MUST HAVE BEEN THE GUY I SAW WALKING IN BY THE EDUCATION CENTER. I WAS IN THE WHITE FORD PARKED IN FRONT OF THE EDUCATION CENTER. I SAW THE SAME ELK. JUST BEFORE I CAME UP ON THE ELK I HAD A NICE PIG RUN DOWN THE HILL IN FRONT OF ME. I SAW A NICE BUCK THAT MORNING BUT THE ELK KEPT ON PUSHING IT AND I COULD NOT CLOSE THE GAP. THAT EVENING I SHOT A SMALL 2X2 AT ABOUT 30 YARDS. I WAS EAGER TO GET OUT OF THE HEAT. TOOK 2 HOURS TO DRAG HIM OUT. IT WAS ABOUT 10:00 WHEN I MADE IT BACK TO THE TRUCK. SHOULD BE GOOD EATIN. I DROPPED HIM OFF AT POUNDS MARKET ON NORRIS ROAD. TWO FRIDAYS AGO I SAW TWO NICE BUCKS UNDER THE TREE BY THE RANCH. ANYWAY GOOD LUCK TO YOU. I WILL BE BACK OUT THERE WITH MY FATHER SO HE CAN FEEL HIS TAG. MAYBE I WILL SEE YOU OUT THERE. I SAW THE SAME COMO'S BLAH BLAH BLAH. I WAS JUST GLAD THEY STAYED AWAY FROM MY AREA.
Hey kick como means something in uh well not english. Rookie it was'nt Me I was in the back where you go through the red gate. I've never parked at the center. Congrats on the buck too. I did'nt know pounds done animals. I always take Mine to wooddale market. 35 bucks cut any way you want wrapped up & ready to eat. How much is pounds?
i know exactly where you were. i saw a nice buck in that area. the elk just kept pushing him. i shot mine about 1 mile south of the ranch. pounds charges about 50 bucks and if you want any specialty sausage it is about 15 dollars more. i might have to try out wooddale. i have bought meat there before and it is always excellent. thanks for the congrats. hope you feel your tag.
Pine Flat Reservoir is east of Fresno. Look at a map of California or Fresno County and find highway 180. Pine Flat is on Trimmer Springs Road off of 180. It's a big lake, so allow some time to drive around it.
newbie17,
Welcome to Jesse's. To get to the Carizzo's, take hwy 166 toward the coast. When you get past Grocer grade look for an old Union gas station on the right. That is Soda Lake Rd. Hang a right and go a few miles till you hit a little kiosk on the right hand side of the road. You find info about the Carizzo area there.
spectr. These are stores in bakersfield. Wood-dale market 250 stine rd. 661-832-7373. Pounds meat market 6508 norris rd 661-399-9305. I was use wood-dale. Very frindley & very good. He insists on hanging meat for at least 7 days before He cuts it. Everything gets double wrapped & labeled. For 35 bucks thats good. Pigs are bye the pound. I don't know how much elk is. Cause after all I've never shot 1. I have seen them hanging in there though. Anyways there ya go. Wavesfr
