So what do you guys think are the chances that Kern will be ready by opening day this year and it will all the units be open ? I highly doubt it on both but fingers are crossed. Plenty of water available from what we've heard

Kern is a big waste of time and putting in for the lottery is a waste of money. Don't do it my freinds.

Re: Kern and water

Things may change. But Kern is expecting to get some water and is hoping to provide at least 'some' opportunity on the actual opener.

And.... There is even a chance they will get a sufficient supply of water to have an opener similar to that about 3 years ago.

Keep fingers crossed

Kern isn't listed for the Aug 20th meeting. Just FYI.

Info I gave was up to date as of today. The way I understand it, they hope to open on time...just a matter of how much of the water/refuge will be available (9-15k Acre Feet).

That place has a special place in my heart.......(going back to the 60's)

The Kern is a beast of a refuge. My 11 year old son had his first duck hunt there last year. It was insane...flock after flock of teal for about 3 hours straight. The 3 of us had limits by 12:00 with some gads and greenheads mixed in. It was the delayed opener and we sweatlined for that hunt! I am worried that my son may have been ruined by the experience!

Was that photo actually taken on the opening day of Kern? My memory is that it rained HEAVY that day. Nice strap.

I checked and you are correct. It was the Wednesday after the opener 12/23. The opener must have been amazing, especially with a little weather!

It was insane! First called in sweet line. Had to just sit and enjoy it for awhile.

Kern is anything BUT a waist of time... It has and continues to be an amazing shoot. Gota remember it's not always about the amount of ducks ya get, it's the quality of the time and scenery. I for one cannot speak for everyone , but I have gotten on at kern just about every sweat line lottery BS I've put in for. Always resulting in an epic time. As for those who haven't made it through the sweat, make plans to just shoot up north to Mendota. That's what I'll do if I don't make it, and I know I'll get on there for a late morning and still throw some steal. I'm a so cal hunter so my waterfowl experiences only get better the more north I go. So I can understand northerners saying different about my opinions. Either way... Kern is very worth it !

This year the Kern NWR we will be opening up on October 22nd. There will be 10 reservations and 5 space blinds and 2 free roam units. Below is a link to our website with information about obtaining a reservation through the state. The site is currently being updated but most of the information is still very useful. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Kern/visit/Hunt-Program.html
