King City hog hunt

Last weekend's results near King City, CA. Two killed with a 30-06 and one with a .270. Range 60 yards to 230 yards. All were ambushed either coming from or going to barley. All 3 are sows about 120-130 lbs. One of them had a nasty, old bullet wound in the shoulder that was full of hundreds of maggots. It was really gross. The meat smelled bad and the fat had turned yellow. Not just around the wound but on the entire hog. My buddy shot another the next morning and that is why we ended up with three. A great time as always.

You got it Shot. DCTR DTH still lives. We had to bury that wounded hog. I have seen wounds before where it didn't seem to effect the whole animal. You could just cut it out. This one had what the guides called the "fever." The meat was a different color, it smelled rancid and the fat was a nasty yellow color. It was just not worth the risk in our opinion. Bummer. It was a bit tougher hunt than in years past. Although we did have our first opportunity not 20 minutes into Friday evening's hunt. Unfortunately my friend could not close the deal. The wind was really blowing keeping the pigs holed up in their beds. Most of our success was from rousting the hogs out of their beds in the canyons. Saturday morning we hunted a vineyard that had barley growing between the rows. Three other guys got hogs there but my buddy and I never had any shots. I then shot mine later Saturday night up on a hillside after spotting her from a distance. She was on her way to the barley. After I shot that one two others popped up out of a nearby bed. We were able to cut them off and that is when my friend took the hog with the wound. It sure didn't seem wounded and acted perfectly healthy. The wound was high on the shoulder, almost into the spine. I actually could not believe the pig was still alive. We didn't even notice the maggots until we skinned the hog past that spot. Once the skin came off the wound they all started crawling out. It looked like it was out of a horror movie. It was just infested. We thought we were done with the hunt. But the guide, being the great guy that he is let me and my buddy go out again the next morning to get another hog to eat. He had his pig down before 6 am as we had a perfect ambush set up on a well used trail coming out of the barley up into some bedding areas. About 15 hogs came out in a single file line and he dumped the lead one. All in all it was an awesome hunt.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Nice pigs! Man, that maggot stuff is really gross. That's just horrible. Shows how damn tough those buggers really are!
