Heathen- I wouldn't get that upset if I thought it was a cat track and everybody else said it was Sasquach. It's really not that big of a deal....really. As to your crappy little comment <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
You'll become better hunters when you know your animals better.[/b]
Last time I checked, there weren't too many Lion tags given out in this neck of the woods for people to hunt, but I feel better knowing there is such a well-rounded individual out there like yourself that the rest of us green horns can count on. All that aside, and as much as I hate to do it right now, I do have to agree that it's a cat. One give away, which shows up better sometimes than others, is that the second toe in is a little longer than the rest. You can see it in the track to the left of the keys pretty clearly, as well as the track in the snow. I'd call both of those right fronts. Also, the pad of a lion is more than twice as big as the toes, clearly seen on the Laguna Mt. track and the track in the snow, which by the way is a beautiful specimen. This is not so in dogs. As far as the claw marks....most of the time you do not see the nails on a cat track, but you can see how sharp and slender they are compared to the blunt nails of a canine. So anyway, I'm purdy darn sure it's a cat, but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it if anybody disagrees.

Bayedsolid got your point.Probly was a "crappy" comment as you put it.Sounds like you got more upset than I did. Also sounds like you know what your talking about.I guess I got alittle carried away.I need to learn how to get a point across without offending folks.Wasn't trying to do that ...I was just trying to explain why that was a mountain lion track.Wasn't trying to act like a jerk.Woodmanship is important to me and I feel that it's important to most hunters.I didn't think that so many people would keep saying that track was a dog's without checking on it.The good part of this is that now many more people on this site know what to look for when checking out tracks.
Sorry to hear that you guys don't get to hunt lions. We can all year...many as we want. They don't eat our joggers. We got them up here But they aren't a problem for me so I leave them alone.

Heathen,
I would'nt sweat it too much. I've personally been "put in check" a couple of times by the guys but no biggy man. You'll find on this site, it's kinda like a family where just as mnhntr says; Sometimes you have to agree to disagree.

Just remember, there are three sides to every story; Their side, Your side, and the Truth.

Typically, the truth is found after each person has been heard. On this site, it almost always comes up at the bottom of a page. And like a wise man (SPECK) once said to me, don't be afraid to put in your

I was hunting Laguna Mountain with HOGFEVER Sunday before last and came across the same tracks. I am no expert on types of tracks but I think they are a little big to be a Coyote track and I do not know how big bobcat get but if it is one it's good size to say the least. I know that with the wet sand it makes the track look bigger than it really is but while I was heading up river there was another set that was allot clearer than the one Lee photographed, If I had to guess I would say kitty track. Just my

No big deal Heathen. I see why you felt you were right, but the comment just hit a nerve. I do wish we could hunt them here though, to keep the population in check. My Grandpa hunted them when there was a bounty on them, and now they're protected. How you get from point A to point B in that situation I'll never know.

If you hunt in D14, you know what a M-Lion track looks like (since that's the dominant track). I say it's a M-lion.

Good call Heathen!

They say a cornered animal is a dangerous thing but it is nothing compared to a creature who has locked himself out of his Dodge.

Sorry I missed out on all this chatter. BTW I followed the tracks all the way up into "THE GORGE" and there were times where no claws were visible but I didn't think to take any more pictures. This picture was right before he jumped over/onto 4 foot high bolder. -might explain the claws. The Idaho cougs from what I can remember have much larger tracks, so it might have been a bobcat- who know. Also as for size, I have an Alaskan Malamute and his paws are smaller than that. There was a dog there that morning and his tracks were half the size. Well at least I gave everyone something to argue about.

cheers

My apologies to Heathen if I came on too strong, but in light of Lee's story I don't have any choice but admit I was most likely wrong.

I was up around Mt. Lassen area this week (X-4 Deer Zone) shooting and snooping and saw some Cat track's along a runoff from the snowmelt. I sure wish I had a Camera on me at the time (Wife had it with the Kids) Tracks looked identical to Lee's without the claw's UNTIL, it jumped over the runoff.

I was thinking dog until I stated remembering the large M&M bit!

I confirmed it was a Lion when I saw where it landed, 12-15 feet on the other side of the washout!!!

A dog would have walk through the water. If not, It would not have jumped that far.

They were WAY too small for a Bobcat. Probably 4in. wide.

If I was to guess that set of print, I would say coyote. Why because I spent too many trip to the place and know Laguna Mtn. very well. Hiked in to spend the weekend in the creek. At night yote howl almost from behind every bush and seen several of them during the day. For the last 15 years never saw a mountain lion and only saw one bobcat. So the chance of this print being a cat is very slim.
