Are there any members here that are knowledgeable hog hunters with dogs. I know a few that try to be successful, but are scratchy at best. They catch one here and there, but I am looking for someone that knows what they are doing. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Flatbroke and Bigworm come to mind, might want to touch bases with them?

Hold on until one of our Hawaiian friends shows up. No one can do knife and dog hunting better than the Islanders. For myself, I prefer the smarts that an Airdale has.

I dont have any dogs of my own but have been hunting over them since I first began hunting. When I'm on Kauai we go every weekend. I know a fair bit about hunting with dogs...not a master sensei or anything though.

bigboarstopper, with 20 years experience, not to mention that monster you posted, you must know what you are doing. I have a year old Catahoula, I would like to train him, and get more dogs. Would it be real hard to get him trained? If it is real hard to train, would it be better to buy a trained dog? How much can one expect to pay for a trained dog? Thanks in advance for your help!

buy a started or finished older dog to train any pups you get. Make sure the dog you buy is broke off trash (deer, coons, squirrels, etc...). A trained dog can be anywhere from free to a few thousand dollars for a top dog. Look to spend around 500-1000 for a solid, dependable, trained 2-3 yr old dog.

If you want bay dogs, buy a started dog that bays and the pups will most likely follow suit (depending on breeding). If you want hammers, get a dog thats heavy on the ears and the pups will most likely join in.

Its possible to get a dog started by itself and many people have done it before, but a lot of the dog's drive is either gonna be there or not. Let the dog tangle with a few penned hogs and take him on a lot of hunts in hog infested areas. Should pick it up on its own if you encourage it.

few questions first. How often will you hunt? How much do you want to spend? If you buy a finished expensive trash free pig dog and dont really use em that much the dogs skills will fade. Best bet for training is hunt your new dogs with somone who has good trash free dogs. Thats the easyest way to do it. You could put your dog in a pen with a pig but its not always a great indication if the dog will actually hunt one down. Also, My best dog wouldnt even bark at a hog in a pen to this day. With your young dog Id make some strips of hog hide for the dog to play with to get it associated with the smell. As for buying a finished dog buyer beware. Most guys getting rid of good dogs usually arent the best of hunting dogs in the first place. If you have a place to go then best bet is to invite somone who has a good pack of dogs that can help you get your dog on the right track. Also possibly ask after a few hunts if he is interested in helping you find a started or finished dog. He may give you a decient price on one of his that you have seen since you have been taking him. 500 to 600 for a good started dog. dog thats been on enough hunts to know whats going on. finished dog probabally round a 1000. But I would want to see the dog hunt first. Keep the better of the pack on the leash so that the dog your looking at will be the one to strike. One last point is buy a good long range shock collar so you can break off cows horses skunks ect. I would start on the cows before you even try to hunt that young dog of yours. let me know if I can do anything else. Im happy to help with any questions.
