Laguna Mountain

Today I decided to check out Laguna mountain. From scouting online, the plan was to follow sweetwater trail to a spring and wait for activity. We saw some old signs of pig but nothing fresh. Further up following the game trail we found a possible bedding area and some scrapes but it was hard to tell if they were fresh. Overall several signs of pig today but unfortunately no pigs spotted.

From what I see, (all could be pigs) Top photo probably not a rub, dirt or mud would be on the tree and the grass beneath would gone. Second pic, pigs tear up ground in clumps not smooth circles. Third pic, looks more like deer on the grass. Fourth pic, that looks like coyote, there’s hair from what they ate in it and they actually stop and take a crap while pigs keep moving and usually don’t drop in piles. Whatever it is, it’s months old. Trail under fence could be pigs, deer are to big to go under. Pigs usually tear the ground to dirt if they use a trail often. But the only thing I could think that would bend the barbed wire is a pig. It’s harder in the summer when the ground is dry, but you should be able to see hoof prints occasionally. Update: while scouting up the mountain from short fence trailhead my brother and I encountered bees. We had to get out of there pretty quickly. Just a warning for others wanting to check out that area. Watch out for bees.

I was sitting waiting for hogs, during the day, and a giant swarm of bees slowly flew by me. There was nothing I could do, there were to many. Luckily they just flew by, scared the crap out of me.

If you go through the (sweet water)short fence. All the way over the ridge and down the other side there s a creek bottom. That looks great and had tons of pig sign. It’s hell to get too and harder to get out. Would be a horrible pack out. went there once . Those days have past me by. But someone with endless energy who would spend the night back there would have a good chance. I jumped a big cat down there who stayed on my sss but out of view after the initial sighting. He never expected someone would be dumb enough to go in there . You will lose some skin busting brush . Super thick in spots and a couple narrow spots where you are skirting private land . also some no trespassing signs that try to convince you you can’t pass . Other than that it’s a peach of place to hunt lol good luck public hog hunters!

I don‘t recommend crawling through any fence or ignoring No Trespassing signs.

Never ! back when I hunted that area I had clear topographical maps and went out of my way to stay on public land. Sometimes the private land like to fudge the boundaries a little. I don’t really blame them for trying to keep idiots off their land. Now days There’s an App for staying on public land!

Yeah, I use onx with offline maps, has good GPS....I may go here in the next few weeks, saw a horde of hogs nearby but was on private land....

saw one south of that area, but on private land....im going to go camp up there in blm next week with the kids and have fun.....do you know if there is any standing water up there this time of year or do i need to pack it all in? im probably going to hit the trail head, go south untill i get to a creek bed and base camp there about 1 to 2 miles in and just hunt up and down that creek bed for a few days....im hoping for some water as life straws weigh less than bottled water.....

When I have done short backpack trips there we have packed it in. Interesting that you say that , I ran low of water on the backside of the sweetwater access , I did filter some water in a small creek. As I headed up the creek I found a dead coyote in the water ewww . I didn’t get sick fortunately , but I still was grossed out. Takes a lot to do that. Careful up there , definitely some rough country . I havnt been up there in a long time . Pig population should be real good and the public areas are about as hospitable as they get this time of year. Good luck !
