That area is basically Chaparral, but with interesting patches of woods to completely wooded slopes.  I don't deer hunt there, because every time I pass that place during deer season there isn't a place to park.  Also, some guys sight-in their rifles under the tree across from the gated road to Sweetwater Spring.  Never did trust those kind!  I would suggest hunting that area mid-week.  Not only to avoid the target shooting, but also to avoid the miners who live in the area.  I sat at the top of the buff across from the parking lot at the base of Laguna Mountain, and watched the miner who lives up the road patrol the parking areas.  For what reason?  It didn't look good to me!

There are plenty of deer in the area, but they're pretty well pressured during the season.  Even now, it's hard to see one and the pressure's been off for months.  You find lots of tracks, but I think they're taking lessons from the hogs and going at night.

If you haven't hunted a-zone before, prepare for heat.  To prepare for a-zone heat, it would be good to roast yourself in a magnesium and white phosphorous fire for a couple of hours every day.  Then, you'll be about halfway ready for the weather you'll find in those canyons.

Have fun, shoot straight, and remember, it's always the one you didn't see that gets you.

Gordon,

I use my beat-up old Jeep Cherokee when I hunt that area.  The guys who hang out at the tree are Viet city slicker types, and try to hide their hardware when I drive by.  A couple of them do hunt, and I parked right next to them without any problems.  I just don't like all the shooting.  I plan to scout Sweetwater during April while I'm fishing Naci for Whites.  I'll let you know what is going on this year.  By the way, I have that BLM  Plat in my computer, so if you want a perspective view from any angle just let me know.

Hey Richard,

When you're in Sweetwater scouting next month, let me know if the hogs are still holed up at night.  I figure they probably will be...if they're in there at all once the fields start greening up down in the flatlands.  I spent a frustrating couple of months tracing sign and hoping to be in the right place at the right time...even had hogs grunt at me in the night.  But have yet to see one in daylight.  Too much habitat and not enough Speckmisser to cover it all.
I think I'm done hunting for this season...at least until August.  But who knows.  If the hogs start to show themselves, I might have to make another hop back up there.
