Lake county boar down

Headed out to the ranch yesterday evening. Unlike a couple of weeks ago, I started to see some scattered hog sign fairly quickly, but not a lot. Walked a ridge to the back of the property and found much more rooting, looked like a herd had come thru looking for acorns. I dropped back down into the valley around sunset and immediately out wanders a big lone hampshire boar about 75 yards away. An easy shot with my -06 dropped him (despite his almost 2" shield!), then it was a race to get the quad and drag him back to base before dark. Ended up dressing him out in the dark and alone, not easy with a 250 lb beast!

I didn't need the meat (other than the tenderloins, sooooo good on the smoker!) so I ended up calling the local police dispatcher - she found an off-duty officer who wanted and came and got it from me.

Nice boar hog! Field dressing in the dark alone is nerve racking, especially if there are predators around.

Yeah I was thinking about that as I heard some noises in the dark around me! Probably a squirrel but sure motivated me to finish up quickly!
