I woke up early this am and couldn't sleep so decided to head up to the ranch and see if anything was moving. Around 8 am I was walking a road down a central ridge when a black sow popped out of the brush and headed up the road about 30 yards in front of me. She dropped over the far side of the ridge so I followed her - turns out she was the last of a herd that must have come out before her as I found myself amongst a herd of sows and piglets. There were several down the ridge below me and as I was getting set to shoot a few others popped out of the brush behind me at a trot. This spooked the ones below me so they started to move - I spotted a big black and white one and got off a quick shot as she moved into an opening between bushes. They all started running down the hill and I followed to see if I could get another shot, not really sure if I'd gotten a hit or not. The rest of the herd was already running across the valley floor and into the brush on the other side, but I looked left and found the sow dead about 50 yards downhill from where I'd hit her.

Big girl, 225 lbs with a big fat layer.

Sorry for the sideways picture, not sure how to rotate...

Alright brother u put the smack down on another porker wtg, I have had that situation where I was tailing a pig for 30 min. Trying to get a shot opportunity and all of a sudden about 30 more pigs busted out everywhere it was mayhem, I guess they refer to a group of pigs as a sounder, I was just left scratching my head on the blown opportunity.

p.s. U better check to see if any of your niegbors pet pig got loose.......lol......tra

I was wondering where my prized Berkshire went!

Just tuggin your nuts, looks like it is showing Berkshire breed by the color. I shot a boar last that showed Berkshire traits, long legs and semi floppy ears. Good pig!
Did it have a thick layer of fat? Sonoma County has a lot of acorns on the ground and I dressed a sow about the same size 2 weeks ago with nearly 2" of belly fat.

I get a fair number of Berkshire striped hogs on my place but this is the best example I've ever shot. Yeah, she was really fat. There are tons of acorns around so plenty of good eats.
