Lake Elsinore to get fleet of rental boats
Jim Matthews, Outdoor News Service
18 March 2010
William Johnson, well-known as the “Crappie King” of Lake Elsinore, will be opening William’s Bait, Tackle, and Boat Rental at the Elsinore West Marina in early April. Still collecting his final permits and insurance, Johnson will be the first to offer rental boats at this increasingly-popular Southern California fishery.
The lake is making a name for itself as a fine wiper (striper-white bass hybrid) and crappie fishery, thanks to massive water quality and fishery restoration efforts and a planting program done by the City of Lake Elsinore. The addition of a rental boat concession is a boon to anglers, especially with the lake’s limited shoreline access. The lake also has two public launch ramps.
Johnson said he would only have four skiffs, a family cruiser, and a pontoon boat initially, but hoped to add more boats as demand increased. He also noted that the spring bite was just starting to kick into gear at the lake. He caught and released four wipers this past week, including one fish that was over the 18-inch minimum keeper size, along with a couple of largemouth bass. He said the crappie are just starting to move into the shallows, and he’s seen a handful of one to 1 1/2-pound crappie in the past week.
For updates on the fishing and information on the rentals, William’s Bait, Tackle, and Boat Rental can be reached at 951-642-0640.
