I'm thinking of heading up to Lake Sonoma Thursday and Friday (11/16 and 17) to try for a hog for the first time. The hunt is restricted to the Warm Springs arm and Rockpile Road area only, and I'm wondering if I can access good pig habitat without a boat. I've never even seen the area so any advice would be greatly appreciated. If anybody has the time, please join me.

If I was flying in from out west to hunt archery Hogs, I would book a few days at Chopper's! He has hogs!Honestly, Lake Sonoma was hit pretty hard by hunters last week...and the pigs are scattered, scared and noctournal...

Good luck and post-up your trip report

GetDown...thanks for your positive comments, but i hate to tell ya, hog hunting at Lake Sonoma is no secret. In fact, the park ranger -J. Miller posts on this site and encourages us (mostly people who don't live in that area) to come up and hunt.

but I'm sure you're right, one day the hunting there will shut down, till then, we're all going to enjoy the opportunity Ranger Joel & the ACOE has given us to hunt hogs.

I'm sorry you feel that way Mr. Down, but I live 45 minutes away from Lake Sonoma, have been flyfishing there for bass for years, and want to get a wild hog with a bow at a place close to home. I respect ALL rules, and wouldn't think of dropping a gum wrapper on the ground. If I treat a wild place well, I hope it that I get a gift in return. With that said, I think it's completely unfair also to label visitors as a problem. It's a cheap shot.

That's it I'm telling everyone I know about Lake Sonoma. The Secret is going to be out of the bag after tonight!

Give me a break, it's open to the public, it's not just yours and thanks for worrying about the trouble makers.
I guess with this thinking we better not hunt public lands in California anymore, with people breaking rules, carrying guns and parking in wrong spots!

Yes, we are coming in from Colorado to hunt hogs at Lake Sonoma, then we are going to head up to the Trinity to do some steelhead fishing. Some of my friends live in SAC and come to colorado for the Elk hunt every year and have invited us to come hunt some of their territory. So, are we just coming there for the hogs......NO. We just figured since we were going to be there with our friends, why not sling some arrows and see if we can score a hog.

For the guy that was so down on outsiders coming in, you don't have to worry about us breaking the rules. We are ethical hunters and dont particularly want to lose our gear over something stupid. We will follow the rules so that we can come back again, and again, and again, and again. LOL

I respect your opinion and do agree with you that there are alot of people that dont respect the land and ruin alot of hunting opportunities for the rest of us. I dont agree that it's the people that are not local. I am sure there are alot of locals that do go up there and ruin it you just may not know they are local. I have never been there but the same stuff is happening all over California and has been for many years. We have the same problem up here in Susanville (now that it has grown because of the prison up here). And just so you know I have known about the Lake Sanoma pig hunt for a while now. I just havent had the opportunity to get down there and try it. It's not a big secret by any means.

I will definately be down there late at night on Nov. 30th until Sunday Dec. 3rd. If any of you guys are headed down there stop on by to say hi and have a cold one.

I'm not for sure. I have never been there and dont even know where to hunt yet. I could definately use some info on the camping situation down there. All I know is about where Lake Sanoma is.

Lots of boat-in campsites. Logger's camp is pretty central to the upper end of the lake. Some of the others are in long 5-mile-an-hour zones on the lake. Liberty Glen is the main drive-in campground and located not too far up the road from the launch ramp. Liberty Glen would be the spot if you are walk-in hunting.
