So it looks like as soon as you cross the bridge heading up Rockpile rd you can start hunting. Now, I know both sides of Rockpile rd have fences, can you just hop the fence and begin hunting or is there access points were you can go through the fence? The yellow block around Liberty glen campgroung is obviously off limits, is this assuming the block represents approximately 100 yards surronding the camp ground? I'll be getting there on the 30th hopefully by 6:30am or so. For those of you that will be going, I'll either be in a brown Toyota 4 runner or a black Silverado. Hope to see you guys there.
Backcountry, thanks for all the work you've done on getting this informaion. I'll call you the weekend prior to see what's up, maybe we can meet up. Again, thanks for the help.
I have fished lake sonomafor years and even guided there for two years. right above loggers camp I have seen many pigs. I live now up in potter valley so im gonna make a trip back down there for some pig hunting. Mel have you ever hunted any of the wu propertys up here in mendocino county for pigs? I have some time comin up and im looking for a spot close to home....thanks
I'm thinking of paddling my canoe up the Dry Creek Arm, from the public boat launch site, and pull up to Broken Bridge Campground. I'd hunt uphill in the morning between the lake and Rockpile Rd., and hopefully have a down hill drag. I've seen pigs down in there several times. I also think the pressure from the hunters above drive them down into the thick/steep stuff toward the lake. Look for me in a red canoe( need to camo it). Flag me down if you need to float one out. I've seen Mel's goin' the 30th, any others?... Mike
I'm planning on the 30th, if it's not gonna storm. I've been in some of those Sonoma County rains before! I drive a teal-green Chevy Z71 extra cab and will be towing my 16 foot aluminum Smokercraft boat, "Too Leaky", rigged out to bass fish. It wouldn't be hard to guess why the name "Too Leaky". Not sure If I will come up Monday late or do the killer middle of the night start.
I'll be there on the 30th... possibly the 29th as well. I don't have a game plan yet as I'm not sure if I'm going by myself or with a buddy (who may have a boat), and I'm waiting to see what the weather has in store regarding camping.
Once I know my plan, I'll post it here to see if we can't get together for a pig-drive or some BS'ing, and maybe a few brews if we're not all soaked and freezing.
Norcalauto,
If you want to hunt some WU properties around the Cloverdale area or Lake Sonoma, you can try Longview Tract which is some steep country but is good for pigs. It's all the way down Rockpile rd. Clarke Ranch has been taking some pigs as well. If you're into archery then try, I think it's called H & E, i'm not sure on that. Look at you manual and look for the archery only properties, it's out of Cloverdale. I'm inactive in the club right now but i'm going to try and get back active next year. I've hunted Hill ranch and Gallatin a lot, see pigs on both but not able to get a shot. Good Luck on were ever you go and let me know how you did.
I will be at Lake Sonoma on the 30th, I hope the weather holds up. It will be me and my son, so look for my 4 runner and maybe we can get something going. Hope to see you guys there.
The WU Properties, Browing and Mosby also has pig. I've killed some pigs from Mosby and seen many more when I was an Active member. Browning supposedly hold some pigs but I've never been there before so not much I can say about it. But I have hunted the Boggs Mtn. State Forest just above the property and seen lots of pig rootings. Back in the late 80s I've seen several people killed pigs out of there. Good luck.
I hope the weather holds up! I checked it at weather.com and it says for the Healdsburg area for the 30th, scattered showers and a 40% chance of rain. I know this is still kind of far out, so hopefully it will change. During this time that I will be off of work, I really don't have nothing going on, so I think I will take the drive regardless just incase and to get an idea for future hunts. Atleast if it does rain it will make for some quite walking.
I just can't put much stock in the 7 day forecast. Just last Sunday when I was up there, the weather report on Saturday was for 70% showers Sunday. Turned out to be not a cloud in the sky... no fog either, but the ground was soaked from the night before and indeed that did make for some quiet stalking.
Ok guys, as of 6:00am this morning i'm on Vacation. If I don't see you at Lake Sonoma, you all have a good holiday
.
Backcountry and Kentuck, I'll be giving you guys a call on the weekend of the 27th and 28th too see if you'll be heading over there. If we don't meet up, good luck!
I've haven't been back in there. I do know that the boat launch area at Yorty Creek is car-topper only... no ramp for trailers.
As of today I'm thinking about driving up EARLY on the 30th and just making it a day trip. I'll probably be by myself, so if you're still planning on taking your boat and there's room, I'm game. Otherwise, I'll probably hunt the walk-in areas off of Rockpile Road.
From info I'm getting from other sources it sounds like the Yorty area is holding pigs. Might be worth checking into. I'll have to let you know about the boat. I think my stepson wants to go. I will have room for three in the boat. Want to talk with Mel when he calls this weekend to see what he is planning. I'll stay in touch.
In spite of today's deluge, weather.com still says its just a 20% chance of rain tomorrow for the Cloverdale area. I'm about 90% sure that I'm going to make it, and it looks like a buddy will be going with me, so we'll plan to pound ground while Kentuck and his crew come at 'em from the sea.
Kentuck, thanks for the Yorty tip... After we sign in we'll head over there first and see what there is to see. Its a big area so we very well might be over there the whole day. What's your boat look like so I can shout an "a-hoy" if I see you?
If I take my truck, its a '99 Ranger with a Ducks Unlimited sticker and NRA life sticker in the rear window. If we take my buddy's truck, I'm not sure what we'll be driving as he's got a couple to choose from.
Looks like I will be there with my stepson. Haven't heard form Mel so I don't know if he will be there. My boat is a 16' Smokercraft with the name Alaskan on the side in orange letters and a blue stripe along the top of the sides, Minn Kota trolloing motor up front and Johnson motor on the back. I will be in the Yorty area probably the whole day. Will most likely launch at the main marina. Really looking forward to the hunt.
If you guys are still speaking to me, how did the hunt go? I got stuck at work. Anyone hunt between Rockpile Rd. and Broken Bridge Campground? The hogs should've been out and about after the big storm. Lots of wood floating in the lake? Hope you've some meat hangin'!
I just got back home to Redwood City, had a quick dinner, and I’m beat tired, but here’s a quick recap of today’s hunting at Lake Sonoma…
First, I have never seen such a huge area of hog rooting… there was rooting everywhere… more than even the Varian Ranch in Parkfield. There is no doubt that this area holds lots of hogs.
Second, I’m heading back again as soon as possible… maybe as early as next week.
Third, we didn’t get a shot, but we did see some pigs, and more deer in such a small area than anywhere else in CA I’ve hunted (including a couple of nice bucks that still had their horns).
I hunted on foot with a non-JHO (but probably not for long) buddy in the Yorty Creek area most of the day. We were out of the truck at first light and it was simply beautiful with all the lake effect fog misting about (it all burned off by 9am). Like I said, we saw rooting everywhere, a lot of it so fresh it hadn’t been rained on (i.e., less than 12 hours old). We took our time still hunting in the deep stuff and glassing from the ridges, but we covered a lot of ground today. The pigs we actually spotted were a ways off across water (north of the Yorty Creek arm), and we couldn’t get to them in a timely manner today. Why we didn’t see pigs with all the fresh rooting around Yorty was pretty surprising. I think one or two more days in the field and we’re bound to stumble across hogs given all the fresh sign, and hopefully get a shot too.
At about 4pm we bagged it at Yorty and drove over to Rockpile Road and it was the same story at every pull-off there… rooting, much of it fresh, and even more deer, everywhere!
Some of highlights of the day… the morning lake-effect fog; seeing a bunch buzzards sitting on a snag in the lake with their wings spread wide to get warm; watching some kind of small dove-sized white owl (with BIG yellow eyes) on a branch right above our heads at arms length when we were still hunting deep in the brush (that owl watched us watch it for several minutes and never seemed scared a bit); cat tracks in a puddle; and all the deer that seemed to be around every corner and over every hill. These are reasons why I hunt, and it was a great day!
Kentuck, I saw a boat that matched your description pulling away from the sign-in station at about 6:30-6:45am when we pulled up. If that was you, hope you had a great day too! Mel, did you make it with Kentuck? MikenSoCo, up for a hunt in a week or two?
Great to hear you guys saw hogs up there. Had a feeling they'd be out and about after such a heavy rain/storm. Next week sounds good Backcountry, thanks for the invite. I'll practice up. Talk Soon- Mike
