I was actually doing the special deer hunt Thursday afternoon, but got a pig instead. Since I was there I purchased my pig pass and they gave me number one. Lady told me people had been calling all day asking about that number. Maybe I should auction it. Kidding.
Anyhow, I have only hunted a 3 times in the last few years and before that I hadn't hunted in about 15 years, maybe more. This was the first time I had shot at any game with my bow (or anything for that matter) in nearly 20 years. I didn't think I would get close as the pigs were several hundred yards away and I had no cover. Plus they were on the move. I ranged briefly before I saw this pig, but the pigs nearby sensed me and were simply moving too fast for me to shoot. There was very little time, and too much excitement, to prepare. I held my draw hoping they would turn. Just before letting down this sow came into my view. I guessed 25 yards. She was moving so I whistled then, with the sun in my eyes, the arrow flew. Blasted right through her as though I was shooting paper and I could hear my arrow plinking through the brush behind her. I couldn't see well so I was unsure of the shot placement, but I thought it felt good. I went to where I hit her and found my fob which helped me get on blood fast. She went about 50-70 yards I would say into the woods. Broadhead took out heart, lungs, and looks like it broke some shoulder/leg on the exit. I am pretty impressed with how all my equipment performed from the bow to the broadheads.
Big thanks to the friends of Lake Sonoma for putting on these special deer hunts. I would have not had opportunity to deer hunt otherwise. Also got to thank Jayson for volunteering his hunting expertise and guidance. Not to mention he made sure I left with a properly cared for pig.
