headed:burnin rubber:eek:ut 4 am yesterday to do my Lake Sonoma pre-registering and get my hunter number and info pack, so far about 125 hunters have register so far.
before signing up i first drove straight to yorty creek to get an early start on scouting the area, no one was around at all so i geared up crossed the creek and started hitting those hills and saddles to get to an area i was intrested in, after only 20 min. into my hike i find a nice active wallow with promising sign. after hr of hiking to the spot their wasn't much visible sign so i started to check other possible locations of the ridges down the hillssides paths to the lake and back up.

the weather started it off great butt once it go to around noon time the heat :hot-sign:was a bit much to spot pigs moving around for sure, it was in the mid 80's i was wearing my micro lite clothing butt when your hiking those hills it feells like a magnifing glass is on your back!

after 3 hrs. of scouting and hiking and glassing the yorty area i was intrested in i fornd a total of :thumbs up2:5 real nice active wallows with the tracks mostly medium and small pig size. try to find bedding areas by sniffing the air fo the sweet smell of pigs, i found a couple of areas not to far from a the wallows but did not want to work my way to deep into to them, i was only wearing shorts and with the extreem heat yeaterday i am sure tick activity was high, had repel on butt still.

by 12:30 it was time for me to drive back to the visitor center pre register and the go scout the liberty side of the lake.
i first went to No Name flat to check out that area but didnt find any strong sign, then i went to hike and scout the liberty glen area and of couse it was all freshly tore up all over with a lot of tracks but mostly medium small pig size. i did finaly find some hogzilla size tracks the size of my palm butt they were old and imbeded from after the last rain.

after 2 1/2 of scouting that side i had to head back home for the almost 3 hr drive before the commute got bad.

my conclusion> after a total of 5 hrs of hiking and spotting and searching for wild pigs yesterday is it was too hot for pig activity for sure even thought i found good active wallows i didnt see one pig, i didnt find any fresh piggie poop!

a matter of fact it was so warm that i didnt even see any deer or bobcats or coyoties or turkeys at all while hiking all over those hills and valleys.

i did not run into no other humans at all on the yorty side i had it all to myself it was nice!

so i am glad i pre scouted so now i no which areas hold some promise if nothing changes to dramaticly over the next 2 weeks.

all i got to say is i hope :prayin :it gets rainy and 20 degrees cooler for the opener it would be nice, i tell u one thing i passed out hard last night after all that physicall activity! butt my body is pre broken in for those hills and slopes now that for sure, thank god that i am a long distant cyclist who pounds hills when i ride becuase u got to be in great condition to work those lake sonoma hills and slopes for sure if u want to hunt hard.

:smiley-mouse:well 2 more weeks and its show:hog chewing::archer green:Time!....tra

i am #85!

i took a quick walk. it was also hot. i found pigs rooting up the dark tree areas..i backed out quietly. they kept at it.

then trying to sneak out, i found a lone HUGE sow. i got to 40 yards of her, and she sat still for long enough for me to put my rangefinder on her. she had big droopy TEETS! my heart was racing, and i was bow-less. it was super fun.

i am not so sure i am going out opening weekend. i hate the free-for-all.

Good report TRA. I hope your post didn't draw too many people's attention to make the spots you mention a zoo come the opener.

i think i did leave out some fine details Live2hunt, anyone who's ben to l.s. knows bottom line is u got to get out there and lay some leather down to find some spots that nobody else will, and haven a boat is a nice option for sure , then there is ovious sign that even a hiker, biker or jogger could even find without effort, but i would think the pigs are just hitting those at night.

i did get a chance to talk to a long time local who even help build the dam back in the day give me some good info, he killed a lot hog in his day at lake sonoma, so that was nice of him to share.

over all it was a great day to be out in nature instead of work thats for sure, cant wait to be back there in 2 weeks!....tra

Hey TRA,

Nice to get a report.......appreciate the info! There's nothing like a little info to get the blood boiling again. My daughter and I happened to draw the dfg "turkey hunt" this coming weekend and I was just wondering if you might have spotted any flocks up there in your travels? I plan to get up there myself to scout sometime this week....just curious as to what you may have found.

Thanks in advance for any and all help?

i was on the yorty creek side from 7:30 am till 12 noon and didnt see or hear any piggies or coyoties or bobcats or turkeys at all it got real hot, then i was on the liberty glen side from 12:30 to 3 pm and nada there too. i know their are alot of turkeys there, just the weather is unseasonably hot right now so it changes their daily pattern somewhat on where and when their hanging out during the day. right now i am still debating on what areas i want to first hit in 2 weeks, it all depends on the weather right now so we will see............tra

Sweet, just came to look for a recent report and not just one but two. Question is boat or foot? TRA ive been shooting with some of your predator crew prior to deer season, Danny and Mike. May have met you out at the Nevada City shoot last year. May we all be sending arrows home and eating pork in two weeks.

Hello LS Archery & Crossbow hunters!
I just wanted to say good luck this season & let me know if I can answer any questions for you. I’ve registered about five hunters today & that brings the total up to 152 hunters registered for this season so far.
Take care,
VC Girl :wavin:

Holy smokes sounds like there are going to be more hunters than pigs up there! I'll be about 15 miles north waiting for the herds to get pushed to me LOL.

Good luck out there and have fun. They are really hitting the acorns hard, so hunting deep in the dark oaks would be my advise.
