lake Sonoma

I'm planning on doing some boat in hog hunting at lake sonoma this winter. I have only hunted hogs once before, years ago at santa cruze island. If anyone would like to join me and show me around and offer some advice, let me know. I hunt or fish Fri.-Sun. most weekends.

Really though, you will find plenty of people willing to help you out, me included. I've hunted it a few times and have hunted the Cooley ranch that borders it for 20+ years. We can draw staws to see who goes

I live in Powers Oregon..You can surely go a little out of your way to swing by and pick me up. Matter of fact, after you pick up AS, he can show you exactly how to get here...Oh yeah, i've never hunted there but i'll be seeing some of you dudes in there this year, and the pigs WILL die.

I'd be happy to help you out with scouting and hunting L. Sonoma. I used to work on the boat doc for 3 years while I was in college there. PIGIG has the hunting schedule posted on any of his posts. I can't wait for the opener. CopperJohn and I are going to be up there a lot this year since we live in SF. Looking forward to hunting with the crew from last year and some new guys from JHO.

Question..... Broadheads for hogs. I use a expandable for deer, should I switch to a fixed blade for hogs?? thanks John

Mel, I am going up Sunday Nov. 5th for the 6th opener.

All three of those lakes are about 3.5 hours from me. However, i do live on probably one of the best stealhead fisheries on the west coast. Small stream fishing has always been a pashion of mine. You're welcome to come and try your hand at it. Those lakes get good as soon as the ice melts in the spring. I usually go camp (scout) over there a couple times a year...

Leaving to montana on the 25th Oct till the 2nd Nov Deer Hunt.
The most recent Hog few months ago from san martin. Pic below 170lb Boar w/1 inch tusk gave the meat to doug.

That's up to you and your confidence in the particular mechanical. I use them for deer also but won't use them on on a pig or elk. Pigs can be very tough. Sometimes even with a good quality cut on contact head and a lot of kinetic energy you can fail to get great penetration. The mechanical will definitely rob you of some of that penetration. It may still be a pass through and it may not. I hit a small sow, about 100 pounds, broadside with a 650 grain arrow topped with a Montec G5 and made it in one side and stopped dead on the shoulder on the other side. I shoot close to 70 lb/ft of KE. No pass through, and slim blood trail, but she died within sight so it was fine. To each their own but for me I want a pass through if possible (better blood trail) and I want to get through the plate on a boar and into the vitals so I persoanlly won't use a mechanical for pigs. Many do with good results though.
