Just got back.......well, Lurediver and myself put in one hellofa a good effort.
Not shots, but i'll post up a good story for ya tomorrow....we got on pigs & plenty of'em, just couldn't manage to put a shot together.
I pulled out my new pair of Danner boots and realized 5 miles later that Lake Sonoma is not a real good place to break'em in.
Anyway, the morning we hiked our asses off and i never found fresh sign till i was at the end of my 5 mile loop and 1/4 mile from the car........it's 10:30am and we sit down for lunch discussing our findings and what our plan will be. A quick call to Pigig for suggestions and we hit the trail again at noon to hunt till dark. I back track the fresh tracks i saw this morning and find two sets of tracks on two different trails going into some thick brush, the tracks were from yesterday mornin' or the night before, so decided to sit in one place for the next 5 hours...a little nap, a bit of Levi Garrett, & a bite to eat.....i started to get bored, i look behind me and see a small knoll, thinking the grass is always greener over the next mountain, i get up to take a peek, that's when i find the motherlode! The trail i found had atleast a dozen pigs using it within the past 12 hours.....i relocate and stay put, my closest shot will be under 12 yards. Perfect, i tell myself....well, it's now almost 4:45 and i don't see or hear a damn thing.......time to make something happen, i walk down the trail a bit and hear some odd noises from the brush, then i hear a "hufffff"....a pig stands from it's bed 15 yards away and runs winding me.....two other hogs get up but are unable to smell me, i ease downhill and kneel trying to make out their images in the dark brush...nothing and they're only 25 yards away. I try to swing uphill and it's too thick to get a shot........by now it's dark and i make one last attempt to get a shot, i pull out my favorite animal mover and chuck a rock below the hogs...nothing stirred and i figure they fed downhill and out of site. A long walk to the car in the dark & good times hearing LD's hunt....his was a hellofa lot more exciting than mine...but he'll tell ya that one.
Well getting up at 3am and hunting all of yesterday has took a toll on my muscular body!
My #1 mission was to find pigs, after seperating from AS in the morning, the area I hunted was hammered in fresh pig rooting everywhere! It had rained the 2 days prior and I knew I was on fresh sign. I kinda of wanted to hunt in the open areas where I could see more open terrain "on edge from a previous experince", hell I found myself in the thick stuff and there was all kinds of sign. Fresh wallows, oak trees rubbed raw and covered in mud from itchy pigs, and tracks all over the place. I hunted for a few hours and didn't see any pigs. After coming up with a game plan Arrowboy and myself were in the general area I hunted the morning hours. We split up and took our postions, mine was right above a huge wallow and a creek there was tracks everywhere. I sat put behind some trees, ate lunch, napped and begun to wait. 4:00 pm I decided to stand and stretch my legs. This whole time I've been still never making a noise just watching and listening. All of sudden a huge boar 20 yards to my front-right starts to bolt and make huffing sounds. He was Large and Black, 250lbs.+++!
DAMM IT!!! A huge boar 20 yards in front of me and he saw me first. My only excuse is he came up from behind a large bush and I never caught his movement. I've seen some big pigs on Chopper's property but he might of been the biggest.
Public Land, huge boar, and good times! I wasn't dissapointed but excited to finally get on pigs on public land. Kirk and I've found a good spot and we'll be back!
Man, great stories guys. Did you motor in with a boat, or did you hunt on foot? I'm still going to try and make it up there before the end of the season, I want to try the place across from Liberty Glenn campground.
No boat, we hiked......i'll be headin' back up there ASAP.
And...i'm looking at either next weekend or towards the end of Jan first of Feb to go for a Friday afternoon, all day saturday, and head back either Sat nite or Sunday morning.....if those dates work, letmeknow. LureDiver and myself will keep at it till a public land pig gets a ride in the Grand Prix.
