The area you mention is the area these animals are being taken, most everything (about everything with elk) north of hwy 58 is private. Now there is just more elk, more public property, and better habitat on the public property. The telemetry locations show us that the improvements are working and the elk are staying on public ground a lot.

Thank's for info dfgelk. I have a friend(mutual) who has drawn that tag TWICE and filled them both with 6x6's on public land. I still don't see how he does it, gets draw? I can't even draw a cow tag. I'll get in touch w/ bob s. about elk projects here, and get my tag out of state.DFG, give me a e-mail sometime. I'm @S.M.L. SLO Hank

let me try to scrape it up and the figure out the intricacies of posting.

Hank4elk, I understand what you mean! There's a canyon I didn't mention on public that I spent a lot of time hunting mostly because they kill 1 or 2 bulls out of it, year in and year out, and they always seem to be BIG!!! As for me, I wasn't able to scrounge one out of there, but I saw some nice bucks!

Cool, I'll definitely try to catch that show on Thursday!

DFGELK what's the deal with the Chimineas, it's a controlled access property? ...a random draw at the orientation? ...or can anybody who draws a La Panza tag just go hunt it now? I would've given anything to hunt the Chimineas, that's where all the elk were when I hunted it.

OMG, that "Elk Chronicles" episode was horrible!

I had such high hopes and the Dad and the Kid didn't listen to the guide and botched the whole deal. Too bad.

I was disappointed that they didn't show better bulls and all of the supporting video WAS NOT from the La Panza unit but was either Grizzly Island or the bulls West of Los Banos.

Bummer! I saw the biggest elk of my life on the Chimeneas and it was a 8x9 beast with mass the likes of which I've only seen on New Zealand red stags. The crown points were palmated out into huge blobs of bone that were just ridiculously heavy and he was probably 60" wide. He was definitley the herd bull as half the bulls in the group of 17 had broken antlers, one antler, etc.

Bummer. So what's the deal DFGELK, is it a draw to access the Chimineas or what?

Yes, there is a draw at the orientation to be able to hunt the Chimineas property. I do not run that hunt so I do not know the actual particulars off the top of my head. There is also the American Ranch that Fish and Game owns which has a good number of elk on it. I have not seen the hunt footage from the RMEF show but it was my understanding the kid was a little nervous with the camera there. Unfortunately he decided not to come back any other weekend and continue the hunt. I believe he was the only bull hunter not to get a bull last year.

Since im a youth hunter i definately need to be putting in for some of these youth elk hunts! So basically if you don't draw to be able to hunt the Chimineas property what other opportunities do you have without paying a huge fee to hunt private property??

If you are talking specifically about the La Panza Jr hunt, there are other Fish and Game properties to hunt that hold elk as well as some National Forest land and BLM land. Read my earlier post, lots of bulls are being taken on public property in the La Panza zone in the last several years. I believe there are numerous options available now without trying to pay a tresspass fee.

Here is an example of some radio telemetry data. I had to shrink it and save it in lower quality to make it fit.

That data is from 05-06 (off the top of my head). I also think it was on a cow. So those are data points off of one elk over time.

The lighter colored areas with all the dots are ungrazed lands and the pink areas are grazed lands. Most of the ungrazed land has been in CRP since around 2002. The southern locations are mostly the Chimineas Ranch (fish and game property). The northern locations are a mixture of Fish and Game, BLM, and private. The elk are responding to the habitat improvements.
